Clarification on our Memories Event; Mon., Dec 1st
Blue and White Natural Elegant Church Flyer

This event will start at 2 PM. You are welcome to stay for the first hour and leave whenever you wish. Most of this event will be just in the first hour.

November 26th marks the 32nd anniversary of Severo’s passing. He is the reason I am here in Cuenca today, and the reason Hogar de Esperanza exists. We often think of death as something purely sad, yet it is also a necessary part of life. Just as a flower dies and gives way to new growth, so too can loss give rise to something beautiful.

I will be sharing my personal journey—from death to new life, from devastation to inspiration and tell the story of how Severo’s life, and his courage, inspired me to bring hope to thousands of others. I know many of you carry similar stories of people who shaped your life in profound ways.

On December 1st, we will come together for a unique event to honor those memories. It will be a time to reflect, to share, and to celebrate the people who inspired us—those whose influence continues long after they are gone. You can share a memory or just listen to inspiring stories.

I hope you will join us for this event at the foundation here in Cuenca of beautiful memories. Reservations by using this link is required.

Do you have an IRA?

Reduce your taxes with a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). Are you over 71 and required to take a minimum distribution this year?

You may be able to reduce or even eliminate your tax obligation by making a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) to our US foundation, Foundation Hogar de Esperanza Inc.

Because we are a registered 501(c)(3) charity with a physical office in Oregon, your IRA custodian can make a QCD to us in several ways:

• Through our online giving page

• By mailing us a check

• By donating directly to our U.S. bank account

If you are considering a QCD, now is the time to begin the process, as the donation must be issued before December 31st to count for this tax year.

If you have questions or need assistance, please feel free to contact me:

Your support helps us continue providing essential services to the most vulnerable—thank you for considering this impactful giving option.

Discussion on Medical and Care Issues

There is an issue in our community that many of us prefer not to talk about—but we should. More and more expats are facing medical issues, and too often the care they receive is far from what any of us would hope for.

Our experiences have taught us a lot about what is available here and, just as importantly, who can be trusted. The reality is sobering: there are very few reliable options, and far too many stories of people being treated in ways that no human being deserves.

I believe that those of us who have lived here for years, contributed to society, and become part of this community deserve better. People who need care should have access to food they enjoy, to care that respects their dignity, and to services delivered in a safe and secure environment.

There are some initiatives beginning to address these issues—but are they enough? And more importantly, are they truly what the community needs?
That’s why we’re starting a series of casual coffee discussions, where we can talk openly about what’s happening, share experiences, and explore solutions.

Wednesday, October 1st
2 – 4 PM
Casual discussion over coffee
Hostal Pichincha- Juan Montalvo 9-78 and Gran Colombia

I’ve asked Harsha, a nurse whom many of you know and respect, and Connie Scuderi to lead the conversation. Together we’ll ask:
What is needed?
What has been your experience?
What issues must be addressed?

This is a chance to speak honestly and work toward creating something better for our community. If you would like to join us, reach out to Patricia.

International Literacy Day and High Tea
https://gringopost.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/WhatsApp-Image-2025-08-21-at-9.55.31-AM1.jpeg

Join us Saturday, Sept 7th, to celebrate Ecuadorian and expat authors and writers, and also get an overview of the needs for more literacy development in Ecuador. We’ll kick off the event with stories about literacy as it relates to Hogar de Esperanza’s work with indigenous peoples and the general population.

Carolina’s Book Store’s owner will give a brief presentation about how she came to her love of books and ultimately owning a book store here in Cuenca.

Dr. Ivan Petrof, a professor at the University of Cuenca, will give a brief talk about his experience teaching literature and spotlight some of the renowned Ecuadorian writers. We will also have several authors with us to talk about their journey from idea to published works, including, Alexander Angamarca, a native Ecuadorian whose works have been celebrated worldwide.

Susan MacBryde, whose book Jaguar Dreams, has been well received and is the story of an Ecuadorian tribe, and how they are suddenly thrust into dealing with disaster as their lives and very existence are threatened by Oil spills. Frances Hogg will join us with a brief discussion of her writers group and the various topics, interests and contributions of the members of her local writers group here in Cuenca.

Of course, there will be a fun food inclusion with our Cuenca High Tea, which will feature our edition of British High Tea, (with coffee, wine, and soft drinks available for those of us who prefer options to tea). Cuarteto Andino will also be performing.

The Chase the Ace game had no winners so the pot is growing and as an added bonus we will have a drawing for items for our gift table. With the holidays getting closer, you can also pick up some great gifts hand made by the Ladies Craft Group.
