“Ordinary Angels” Film Screening
Wednesday, May 15, 6:45 PM
Based on a remarkable true story, this film centers on Sharon Steves (played by the incredible Hilary Swank), a fierce but struggling hairdresser in small-town Kentucky who discovers a renewed sense of purpose when she meets a widower working hard to make ends meet for his two daughters. With his youngest daughter waiting for a liver transplant, Sharon sets her mind to helping the family and will move mountains to do it. What unfolds is the inspiring tale of faith, everyday miracles, and ordinary angels.

Urgent request to help a family in crisis

A Cuenca family is facing significant problems that they cannot fix themselves. The members of this family include a young, single mother with a 12-year-old daughter who can neither walk nor speak. This young mother and her disabled daughter live with the girl’s grandmother and aunt. Their combined incomes barely pay for their food and utilities.

This family is in urgent need of assistance. The conditions within their home are dire. The home is unsafe and unhealthy.

Their two-story home lacks a stairway banister, making it difficult and dangerous for the disabled daughter to be moved or carried safely between floors, particularly to access the kitchen on the main floor.

Diego Buitron art opening this Wednesday

Our next art exhibition couldn’t come at a more crucial time! We’re experiencing firsthand the consequences of our planet’s current state and the urgent need for change in our daily habits. Diego Buitron’s exhibit “Madre Tierra” beautifully captures the essence of caring for and respecting our Mother Earth.

The exhibition is mixed media with acrylic on canvas and collage using recycled materials and soils. It is a combination of three separate collections that weave together ancestral wisdom, the beauty of Mother Earth, and the joy of an active life.

The opening is May 15 at 6 PM

During the opening, Diego will do a live body painting demonstration. We will also have a collective canvas where each of us can paint, draw, collage or whatever suits our fancy. At the end of the exhibit, we will unveil this artwork made by the community!

Art is a powerful vehicle for social change. This exhibit will inspire us to reflect on our impact and the actions we must take so we can leave a legacy of a clean, dignified world for generations to come.

Don’t miss this inspiring exhibition at idiomART!

Now open! Our brand-new space for groups to play!

We are proud to announce that our card/board game space is now available for rent. Are you tired of trying to play card games such as Hand and Foot, Pinnochle, or Cribbage or board games such as Mexican Train Dominoes or MahJong in public places such as restaurants? Our space is set up to provide a very safe place – no armed gun men or purse snatchers here – for your group to come and play.

The room is equipped with both square and rectangular tables, comfortable chairs, great lighting, a private bathroom and it’s in a safe, easy to get to location just one block from Supermaxi Las Americas. You can rent it for $5 an hour as often as you like, for as long as you like. No more feeling guilty because you are using a table that a paying customer might need. No more cleaning your house for guests or feeling obligated to provide snacks. Everyone can bring their own and we do the cleaning. It’s a dedicated space, so there won’t be any one wandering around you and no umbrella holes in the middle of the tables. It’s private and much cheaper than everyone having to buy something to eat so you can use the tables.

Please call our WhatsApp number to set up a time to come and check it out!

International Community Meets May 12

Come celebrate Mother’s Day with us this Sunday, May 12, at 11 AM. We will be giving thanks for the role motherhood plays in our lives and how it is an example to us all of the ultimate selfless life.

We will all be blessed through the Bible Study, the wonderful solo, “God Will Make a Way” sung by Diane Moreno, and the witness of Nancee Dobbs about the absolute greatness of living a Christian life while being a mother.

It’s going to be a great day and it will be even greater if we get to meet you!

Help us get home

Thank you for all who have donated. We appreciate your support and love for the current paws residing here. Thanks to all who have donated, we were able to make another deposit on the transportation. We still need $3,600 to get these fur babies home. We have come so far but still have so far to go in such little time. Please keep sharing this fundraiser. We appreciate your help so much!

For over six years, I’ve dedicated myself to rescuing dogs in Ecuador, all while being a single mom without assistance with the children in the country. Now, as I prepare to leave next month, my heart is set on ensuring the safety and well-being of the remaining 10 dogs and one cat under my care. These furry companions haven’t yet to find their forever homes, and I simply can’t bear the thought of leaving them to fend for themselves on the streets. To make this transition possible, I’m reaching out for support to cover the expenses of transporting each animal across the border, along with necessary vetting costs.

Saturday at Pájaro y Bestia

Gumbo days continue. Remember, we have okra in our gumbo for the first time. Okra is not essential to gumbo (or gumbo would only be a seasonal dish), but it makes a nice touch. Interestingly, the entire staff of P and B had no idea of what okra is. Never seen, nor tasted. I wonder how they will take it when el Jefe explains gumbo “slime” to them and how it is a thickening agent for soups.

• Spareribs
• Pulled pork sandwiches (coleslaw on top to make it complete)
• Onion fried hamburgers
• Tennessee Sweetheart – Pork loin with whiskey, mustard, sugar, and seasoning inside.

Saturday Language Exchange at ¡Vamos!

We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish. The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills, putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers.

The sessions are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.

It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the later can practice English. If your native language is not English but you are still willing to learn Spanish, don´t worry! You are still welcome to come.

Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging into the city’s cultural activities.
