Prohibido Centro Cultural tour
May
13

Let's discover this legendary place in Cuenca, the Prohibido Centro Cultural!

30 years ago, Eduardo Moscoso, born in the Amazon, transformed his home into a veritable work of art, a cabinet of curiosities, and a cultural center.

Long censored for its art that addresses societal taboos, this place is a symbol of freedom of expression. It is also a place where the artist talks about the beauty of the Amazon, his childhood memories, and the myths and legends of the jungle.

His son Franco will be our guide. He speaks Spanish and is fluent in English. People who have already taken this tour have told me that it was a real treat to be able to chat with Franco about all sorts of topics and, above all, to hear his perspective as the artist’s son.

This tour can also be translated into French.

Saturday Morning Language Exchange at ¡Vamos!
May
9
1 Language exchange Vamos

We kindly invite you to join our Spanish-English language exchange meeting.

The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills, putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers.

The sessions are guided by experienced facilitators and there will be games, activities and topics of conversations to stimulate interaction. It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. we get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the later can practice English.

If your native language is not English, but you are still willing to learn Spanish, don’t worry! you are still welcome to come. Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging into the city’s cultural activities. Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.

We are meeting on Saturdays from 11 AM to 12:30 PM. Also, in order to enhance the experience of all attendees, we will have a bilingual facilitator for each of the conversation groups, that will guide and explain the speaking activities. In order to keep the event manageable and for everyone to be able to learn and interact, our language exchange will be limited to 24 people, divided into three groups. Please, do not forget to save your spot by texting us or emailing us. Thank you!

A morning in Challuabamba / food, antiques, and nature
May
8

During my first year in Ecuador, I lived in the village of Challuabamba. I loved my life there. Let me take you on a morning tour of my favorite spots.

Let’s start with a visit to the Museo de la Gastronomia, which is about more than just food. There, you can discover the treasures this place holds, such as its beautiful gardens, its huge antique warehouse, meet all the animals that live there, enjoy the café and restaurant, explore the new craft workshop, and much more!

Next, we will visit Maria-Augusta at her shop, where she sells kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha, and apple cider vinegar, all made naturally by her. She also sells all kinds of natural foods in bulk.

Next, we will visit Rocío and Eduardo’s lovely home. They are true flea market and antique enthusiasts. They spend their time hunting for treasures to resell. you can even ask them to find a specific item for you. They also have plenty of plants for sale.

We will wrap up at Andrés’s bakery, where he and his family bake sourdough bread as well as other pastries and treats.

Feel free to send me a message if you'd like to see photos and videos from the visit.

Friday, May 8.

9:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

The return time is approximate, so please do not make any plans afterward.

Meeting point: Downtown Cuenca. Address given during registration. Same drop-off location.

$30 /person. Includes:

- Round trip by minivan (25 minute from Cuenca),

- The entrance fee to the museum.

Savvy day (online): a space to reflect on support and solo living
May
17

I’m also holding an online version of this space for Solo Aging Visibility Day. (see separate ad)

This is for those living abroad (or thinking about it) who are navigating life more independently — and starting to think about what support really looks like over time.

It’s not a workshop or a lecture.

It’s a space to step back and reflect on:

- what’s actually supporting your life

- where things feel clear

- where there might be gaps you haven’t fully looked at yet

Through guided reflection and shared conversation, we begin to see what’s often hard to name on our own.

Most people come in with questions like:

“Am I the only one thinking about this?”

“Where do I even begin?”

You don’t need answers to join.

Just a willingness to look at things a little more honestly, in a space where you’re not the only one.

Online — May 17, 4 PM (Ecuador) / 5 PM ET / 2 PM PT

If you’d like to join, send me a message and I’ll share more.

Colleen

Savvy day: a conversation on living abroad with more clarity
May
13

I’m holding a small in-person space in Cuenca for Solo Aging Visibility Day.

This isn’t a workshop or a presentation.

It’s a guided, conversational space to pause and take a real look at what supports your life abroad — and what might be missing.

Many of us have built full, meaningful lives here.

But the structures that support those lives aren’t always visible, or intentionally built.

This space is for exploring that — gently, and together.

We’ll reflect on:

- what currently supports you

- what feels clear, and what doesn’t

- where you might want more structure or awareness

No pressure. No need to have answers.

Just a chance to step out of the day-to-day and see your life a little more clearly.

- Cuenca, May 13 (11 AM - 1:30 PM)

If this resonates, send me a message and I’ll share the details.
