We need your skills, knitting and crochet crafters

Compassion Kitchen feeds the homeless of Cuenca. Many are children.
Winter is approaching and these kids need gloves and hats.

Please, please use your skills in knitting and crocheting to provide gloves, mittens and hats for these kids. They range in age from a baby to 14.

Although Peter and Sally provide food for these unfortunate folks, we know how cold the evenings and early hours are. These children are without the warmth of a home…let’s provide some warmth to get them through the cold season.

Please contact your friends who can help in this project.

Peter Dudar of Compassion Kitchen will provide pickup of the finished hats and gloves.

Thank you so much for helping these kids!

Cost: $10

The foundation is also excited to introduce to you at this event our new interim assistance director who will be taking over the Wednesday Escapade program. Alejandra will talk a little about her passions and her roles within the foundation.

Music for Medicine benefit concert

Next Sunday, Grace Foundation and Idiom Art are sponsoring a benefit concert by Blues Enigma for long time local musician Frank Polo, who recently suffered a severe heart attack either while playing at Idiom Art or right after his performance. As you know, in Ecuador his surgery to repair his heart was free, however now he needs expensive lifesaving medicine which is not free. His monthly bill is $130 per month which is not much by American standards, but in Cuenca it is over 25% of a person’s income when you have a real job. He continues to perform, as his health allows.

Urgent request to help a family in crisis

Hi! My name is Raj Gupta. In December 2023, I moved to Cuenca as an International Project Coordinator working with the non-profit organization, “They Have a Name,” which is headquartered in Hackensack, New Jersey, and has been a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization since 2019.

“They Have a Name” is an organization that is dedicated to providing assistance to individuals who have “fallen through the cracks” of governmental and societal safety nets. The organization was founded by Dr. Sara de Bernal, who is originally from Ecuador. (Read more about Dr. Sara de Bernal and the “They Have a Name” organization on their Facebook page.)

In addition to collaborating with and supporting several project leaders affiliated with “They Have a Name” organization in various regions of Ecuador, I am now a professor with the Special Olympics-Azuay, working closely with Señora Nelly Sarmiento, the Program Director for the Special Olympics-Azuay organization in Cuenca.

Mady-transparent sm3, giving new purpose to items

What does Hogar de Esperanza do with your donations of clothing and household items? First and foremost, we give them away to those who are most in need of them. Great care is taken to make sure that they get exactly what they need. Any extra items are sold in Esperanza Thrift Shop, where all of the proceeds go back into directly supporting the foundation’s work of helping those in need.

Are you moving soon – perhaps across town or maybe even back home – and you have items that you can’t take with you? Do you wish you had someone to come carry away those items remaining after your moving sale, that you don’t know what to do with? Were you just spring-cleaning last week, and came across clothes in your closets that you no longer wanted? If you would like to do some incredible things with those items you no longer need or want, let us turn them into something valuable to help those in need.

Compassion Kitchen daily sandwich program…

Hi! Right now, we have a program helping to feed street people, but over the years the need has grown dramatically due to the pandemic, immigration, lock downs and lack of work. Currently Compassion Kitchen is feeding 200 plus people each day, every day, and we would love to hear from you so if you can help us, we would be most appreciative.

You can see our carts at 12:30 PM every day, wandering around Parque Calderon and distributing sandwiches and fruit with the wonderful help from a few volunteers.

Would you be willing to commit a couple of hours, one day a week, to make 30-40 sandwiches as a donation?

Your sandwiches will be picked up by moto and delivered to three volunteers at Parque Calderon, who will then circulate the area and distribute them from 12:30 to 2 PM…

This is an initiative started by Peter and his wife Sally, and they have been providing this service every day for the past four years, the look of gratitude from grateful locals is priceless!

You are welcome to call or message anytime for more information.

A helping hand for wheelchair

Hi everybody, This is Dra. Grace’s Office! As some of you know, we like to be active in the community helping others that really need a hand, and this time we are looking for a wheelchair.

One of our patients, was diagnosed with cancer and has several appointments to attend for his treatment. His left side is completely paralyzed so every day is a rough battle for him. The wheelchair will help him and his family to mobilize during his day to day.

If you have a wheelchair that you would like to donate, lend or rent, please let us know and let’s help another human being together!

The Lifelong Smile: Why adult dental health matters

In the grand narrative of self-care, dental health often takes a backseat once we reach adulthood. Yet, the truth remains steadfast: our pearly whites deserve the same tender loving care throughout our lives. Here’s why.

First and foremost, oral health is the cornerstone of overall well-being. Neglecting it can lead to a domino effect of health complications, ranging from gum disease to cardiovascular issues. In adulthood, when our bodies face increasing challenges, maintaining a healthy mouth becomes paramount for a thriving existence.

Moreover, adult dental care is an investment in longevity. Our teeth are not invincible; they age alongside us, susceptible to decay, wear, and disease. By prioritizing regular dental check-ups, cleanings, and adopting good oral hygiene habits, we fortify our teeth against the ravages of time, ensuring they stand the test of years.

But the significance of adult dental health transcends mere physical well-being. A confident smile is our social currency, a gateway to connections and opportunities. Whether in professional endeavors or personal interactions, a bright, healthy smile exudes vitality, confidence, and self-assurance.

In essence, caring for our dental health in adulthood is not just a matter of routine maintenance—it’s a pledge to ourselves, a commitment to living our best lives. So, let’s embrace the toothbrush, wield the floss, and make our smiles a lifelong masterpiece. After all, a healthy smile is not just a reflection of our dental regimen; it’s a reflection of our dedication to a life well-lived.

Important message from Hogar de Esperanza

Due to presidential decree 226, work is suspended for all private and public sector workers for two days, Thursday April 18th and Friday April 19th. This means that we are forced to close our Thrift Shop and Expat Services Center until Monday, April 22nd.

This is due to the disruptions in the power grid and other factors affecting it which are expected to intensify over the next few days.

Any time we must close, it had an effect on our finances. Your support would be greatly appreciated. If you need to contact us, you can do it through email and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

Lecture: The Foundation of Cuenca

Join us this upcoming Saturday, April the 20th to our second lecture about the Foundation of Cuenca. This lecture will go over on how the Spaniards founded Cuenca after two decades of the fall of the Inca Empire in 1533.

The lecture will also cover how Cuenca, starting as a little village, was founded over Cañari and Inca Vestiges being the perfect example of how the rules and habits for founding cities in Europe are applied to the Spanish colonies in America.

Cuenca kept the Inca name of Tomebamba until April 12th of 1557, when Gil Ramírez Dávalos, by order of the Viceroy of Peru, Hurtado de Mendoza, founded the city of Cuenca honoring his homeland in Spain.

If you missed our previous lecture (The pre-Columbian Cuenca) this time you can join the complementary museum tour which will help you understand better the Cuenca origins by visiting the pre-Columbian (Inca and Cañari) artifacts collection. Lecture and tour are in English.

Volunteering opportunities on ecological farm

Hello folks, my name is Nicholas Barringer, originally from Minnesota. I have lived in Ecuador for almost 14 years. I have a sustainable farm just two miles outside of the city of Zamora which is considered “The Botanical Gardens of the Americas”. It is also known as the City of Birds and Waterfalls, located in the Amazon Basin.

Zamora is higher in altitude and the weather is very pleasant and there are no bugs as one might expect when they think of the Amazon. We are located 5 hours from Cuenca. I am able to host volunteers at this time and I also can provide tours or nicer accommodations to those who wish to pay to stay for one or two nights.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if there is any interest in volunteering or vacationing to the city of Zamora for the purposes of bird tourism or tourism in general to this nature hot spot.

Wednesday Escape to Guachapala

Foundation Hogar de Esperanza has started a new series of short trips to places you want to visit. They are a great way to meet new people and to visit places you may not want to go to alone. We provide transportation and English translators.

On April 3rd, we are going to Guachapala and visit the award-winning Linda’s Rose farm. From there, we will visit the sacred community of Andacocha. From Cañari times, this was a spiritual place where people went before they migrated. You can feel the significance of this place as you walk around. Today, a church is there and a candle capillo where people go to pray.

Then on to a unique centuries old home where we will have a roast chicken lunch. It’s an old general store, museum and a cafeteria all in one. You will also get to try the incredible ice cream they make.

The all-inclusive trip cost $40.

Material for kids with dyslexia

Hi everyone!

I’m teaching English to a girl with dyslexia. I require English material to teach her correctly and in the right way. If anyone has some material that can lend me or would like to give it away, I will be greatly thankful and appreciate your effort on this!

Yearly meds collection
Annual collection of medication

Hello Friends:

My name is Diana Vera, As you may know, I have been collecting medication and medical supplies that you don’t use anymore, to donate to the several local nursing homes in town. They are in a great need now. Every little bit would help!

We also collect gauze, alcohol, bandages, shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, wet wipes adult diapers or any other medical supplies that you have, like crutches, walkers, canes.

Do you like to sew?

Hogar de Esperanza has provided baby kits for underage mothers at the Vincente Corral public hospital for about four years now. We have an agreement with the hospital whereby they contact us when they have an underage mother or a mother in a vulnerable situation.

We are grateful to the many expats who have made blankets, knitted caps, etc. for hundreds of young girls. We however we are almost out of diaper bags to hold everything. It is a simple design and we must use this design as it is approved by the hospital.

If you know how to sew and would like to assist us, please contact us. To support our program for young mothers, you can make a donation at: https://hogaresperanza.org/en/donations/

Giving new purpose to items you no longer need

We accept anything that you wish to donate, and put it to immediate use. You can come by the thrift shop, which is located at 8-28 Juan Montalvo y Mariscal Sucre, to drop off items Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 5:30 PM. We also do pick-ups of donations, so feel free to contact us to arrange a time. Thank you so much for your support of Hogar de Esperanza – we could not do any of this without you.
