Time to give up on MagicJack?

For years I have relied on MagicJack for my US phone number, especially with banks and government agencies, but lately both my MagicJack Message and Voice Mail in-boxes have been infested by constant unwanted political and Medicare related sales messages and calls and stopping and blocking them doesn’t seem to work. As soon as I cut off one head of the Hydra, others appear.

Is it time to give up on MagicJack as a reliable, convenient way to stay in touch with the USA? Even if I request a new MagicJack number, there will be a lot of service provider web sites that I have to visit to officially change my US contact number, so I am trying to avoid that, and there will probably be no guarantee that the problem won’t quickly create itself again.

Has anyone tried Google Voice as a low cost, effective way to stay in touch with the USA? Does Google Voice work the same whether you are in the U.S., or Ecuador, or elsewhere? Does anyone have any other phone service providers or solutions to recommend?

You can set it up requiring incoming callers to push an extra digit to allow the call to go through. This eliminates robo calls. Like an automated call screening. 0 0

But this doesn't help when your bank sends you a text. 0 0

You know when your bank is sending a text. So you just turn it off for that 5-10 minutes. I have been using MJ for 9 years this way. 0 0

Thanks, Nathanael. I'm not sure what you mean "turn it off for a few minutes." Using MJ for at least 15 years. We've found it easier to ask the bank to call us with the code. 0 0

I dropped MajicJack about a year ago. Google Voice is a better service and works with my banks, but...needs to be set up in the US. 0 0

Sometimes I can do us-only setups using a VPN on laptop .... then making that a hotspot and logging into it if the setup is to be done from a phone 0 0

I have no problems with my MJ. I occasionally receive unwanted calls but they seem to be fewer lately. Have you tried putting your US number on the do not call list there? 0 0

I have had Ooma for 11 years with the only issue being you cannot receive text messages. For a onetime fee you can port your current phone number. 0 0

I am in Europe and using MJ and don't really have problems with unwanted calls. I also have Google Voice and the same there too. They are both very handy when communicating with US Banks and Govt offices. 0 0
