Do you live in the Cuenca and Azogues area, or will you be in the area for the Carnival days? Would you like to know about the native ethnic group of this region of Ecuador? If so, we invite you to join our 2-day tour of Monday and Tuesday, February 12 and 13 with BilDev Tours!
We will go to canton El Tambo in the province of Cañar, which is located 42 miles away from the city of Cuenca. This province is the cradle of the Great Cañari Nation, a culture that emerged in these territories approximately 2,000 years B.C. (Narrío phase) and has left a great legacy in terms of ceramic art and traditions.
The Cañaris have lived in this territory prior to the Inca conquest, and they are still here. This festival, the Lalay Raymi, or Cañari Carnival, is the perfect occasion to know about their traditions and history directly in their territory. The current Lalay Raymi is a merging of Andean and Christian traditions, and it is the feast of flowering, but it started being celebrated during the carnival days so that it was not totally lost.
