As members of the local and expat community in Ecuador, we often look out for one another in times of need. Today, we have a unique opportunity to come together and truly save a young life here in our community.
Ruth Andy Vargas is a bright, ambitious 22-year-old Kichwa woman from the Amazon jungle who dreams of attending university to become a psychologist. That dream—and her life—is severely threatened by a rare, aggressive cranial tumor caused by Paget’s Bone Disease. With no local healthcare safety net in her region, she has faced this frightening medical crisis relying entirely on community compassion. Thanks to incredible early generosity, her life-saving surgery is now officially scheduled for November 12, 2026, at Hospital Metropolitano in Quito.
While we reached our initial $25,000 milestone, escalating medical realities have created a critical final hurdle. Because the tumor continues to grow and press toward her brain, specialized pre-surgical scans have been required. Additionally, an expensive custom cranial prosthesis is needed to replace the bone structure removed during surgery. She will also need extended post-operative ICU care in Quito. Tragically, the tumor has already destroyed the vision in her left eye, and time is running out to save the sight in her right eye.
We are closer than ever to giving Ruth her future back, but we cannot cross the finish line without the community’s help. Every contribution—no matter the size—directly funds her surgical team, prosthesis, and critical recovery. If you are in a position to give, or if you can share this message within your own network, you can make all the difference.
