From the bones: a different way to move

Most people think movement comes from muscles. we stretch them, strengthen them, and often blame them when something hurts. Yet there is another part of the body quietly supporting us every moment of our lives: our bones.

During my studies in somatic education, I discovered something that changed the way I understand movement. The skeleton is what truly supports us. Muscles are designed to help us move, not to carry the burden of holding us up all the time.

When we rely too heavily on muscular effort, we often create unnecessary tension, fatigue, and stiffness. But when we begin to sense and trust our bones, the body organizes itself more efficiently. Posture becomes easier, breathing flows more freely, and movement requires less effort.

This idea is especially valuable in Pilates. Rather than forcing the body into position, we learn to find support from within. Strength develops naturally, not through struggle, but through better organization and awareness.

The psychologist Wilhelm Reich suggested that our life experiences are reflected in our muscles. Tension patterns often mirror the ways we have adapted to stress and challenge. Muscles carry much of our personal history.

Bones, on the other hand, feel different. Beneath our stories, habits, and identities lies a structure that is simple, stable, and shared by all human beings.

Perhaps that is why connecting with our bones can feel so grounding.

True posture is not about holding yourself up. True posture emerges when you discover that something deeper has been supporting you all along.

“Like roots beneath a tree, our bones support us quietly and deeply. From there, the journey back to ourselves begins.”
