We have begun to receive our first donations for completing the community center in San Raymundo II, an underprivileged barrio in Salinas. We still have a long way to go, but the support of sponsors near and far can help make it happen.
This barrio on the outskirts of Salinas contains approximately 250 homes and 400 children. The community has slowly, over the years, started to construct their community center without any outside help. With our support, it can be completed on March 29th, which is also the International Day of Good Deeds.
The community center is part of a greater initiative for Hogar de Esperanza and our partners in Salinas. While our current work in Cuenca focuses on treatment of patients with HIV and other illnesses, and helping those who have suffered from abuse, our goal for this project is on the side of prevention.
Programs for the residents, with a focus on the youth, will take place in the completed community center. These programs include prevention of teenage pregnancy and HIV, skills building, and motivational events to display all the opportunities available in life to those who often are not exposed to such ideas.
