For those who remember the original La Mamminas, its closing left a real void in Cuenca—especially for anyone who appreciates truly exceptional Italian food. Their pizza was, without question, the best I have had in the city.
So it was a pleasure to discover that La Mammina Cocina has reopened with a fresh, practical concept.
Owned by María José Calderón Repetto, the new space is more of a gourmet take-home kitchen, located on 12 de Abril next to Fogo Restaurant and across from Los Nogales Mall. It offers the added convenience of on-site parking.
The menu includes pre-made, frozen Italian specialties—pizzas, empanadas, tortillas, breads, and pastas such as ravioli, lasagna, and cannelloni. Everything is ready to take home, or they will heat it for you to enjoy at a few tables on the covered portico. Drinks and desserts are also available.
I recently purchased four pizzas—two ham and two pepperoni—and prepared them at home. They were excellent. What sets them apart is the crust: thin and perfectly crisp, unlike the thicker, often soggy versions found elsewhere. The individual sized pizza sells for $5 and I was able to get 8 good-sized pieces from it.
It’s a concept that offers flexibility without sacrificing quality—something that works particularly well for expats who want great food at home without the effort.
And as far as I’m concerned, it’s not good pizza unless your mouth is bleeding when you’re done eating it.
