We old timers here in Cuenca remember the days when JT and his wife Betty were active in the community. Betty, an RN consultant, was a strong advocate for expats and others in medical crisis, surgery, hospitalization, palliative care and hospice. She was our medical pit bull who got results and protected patients from harm within the system. JT was equally active and of service within the community. He started and ran a Spanish language book club for anyone wanting to improve their Spanish and read books written by Cuencanos. He also helped me with a seminar and with an outing to visit assisted living facilities here. And he is well known for his work with other locals and expats painting over the graffiti blight that used to cover walls around town. These are some of the things I remember JT and Betty for. They were also wonderful friends of mine.
Several years ago, they moved to Argentina, Betty’s hometown, Buenos Aires.
Saturday I learned that JT had passed peacefully and without pain in Betty’s presence after a lengthy struggle with heart issues. It is with great sadness and love that I write this. He was a good man and a dear friend. JT will be missed.
