We’re excited to share our first Cultura Viva Spanish class of the year—a program that invites you to learn Spanish through the arts and culture of Latin America.
Cultura Viva isn’t a traditional grammar class. Instead, it offers an immersive way to strengthen your Spanish, expand your vocabulary, and deepen your cultural understanding through guided discussion, creative activities, and meaningful cultural exploration – all conducted in Spanish and in a supportive, participatory environment.
This month’s theme:
** Mitos y Leyendas Andinas: Perú, Bolivia y Ecuador **
This course invites you into the world of Andean myths, legends, and oral traditions, exploring the stories that have shaped cultural identities across Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.
Through creation myths, ancestral deities, sacred landscapes, and local legends, we’ll explore how Andean cultures understand nature, spirituality, and community—and how these worldviews continue to resonate in contemporary life.
Drawing on Inca mythology, legends surrounding Lake Titicaca, Ecuadorian stories linked to volcanoes and historic cities, and regional traditions from Azuay, Cañar, and Morona Santiago, participants will identify shared symbols and regional variations, reflect on their cultural significance, and create an original myth or legend as part of the learning process.
The program concludes with a special session led by guest speaker and local historian Berenice Cárdenas, who will explore how Andean myths continue to influence contemporary culture, art, and everyday life.
