A relatively new government service I discovered recently: an official digital version of the cedula. Provides an official ID without having to carry a physical original or copy of one’s cedula.
The process was done on-line and required some patience and a few tries.
For those interested, download and run the app “GOB.EC” and choose the “Regístrate aquí” blue link at the bottom of the app window. On the next page, choose the “Video pregabado” option and follow the directions, which require one to record a video selfie (<40 MB large) with a script provided, then upload the video (which goes to the government department that issues digital cedulas).
The first few times, I received an apologetic email from the department saying the video didn’t go through properly and asking me to resubmit it. The third time, I received an email saying my application was successful and providing me with instructions for fully registering my account in the app, which allows me to pull up my digital cedula using a facial ID login.
Good practice for those learning Spanish. Good brain training despite the pain. And really cool to see a crisp official digital copy of my cedula on my phone.
Seems a bit like the digital drivers licenses being rolled out in the US.
Hope this helps someone out there.
