It’s that time of year again—a moment to embrace shifting seasons and reflect on our journey through life, how we treat one another, and the values we hold dear.
In the North, the December solstice is a time for winter’s holiday festivities, symbolizing a ‘return to light,’ the renewal of “the Son” (or Sun), and the hopeful turning of the Gregorian calendar into a new year. It’s a period filled with intentions, resolutions, and the promise of transformation.
Here in the Andes, a few degrees south of the equator, the December solstice is known as Capac Raymi and represents a time when the sun is generous, and the days are at their longest. The energy of this celebration isn’t so different from the themes that resonate in the northern hemisphere, though it manifests uniquely through Andean traditions and culture.
Capac Raymi, a Quechua term that translates to “Celebrating the Leader” (Raymi = celebration + Capac = leader/nobleman), is deeply rooted in indigenous practices. Traditionally, this was a rite of passage for youth, inaugurating them into their community roles. It marked a significant life transition, signified by changes in dress and the assumption of responsibilities in trades, craftsmanship, and courtship.
The Andean culture’s rhythm is harmonized with the agricultural calendar, and Capac Raymi is no exception. This annual celebration follows the time of ‘siembra’—the planting season—and honors the period when water is abundant, the sun is favorable, and growth is everywhere. Seeds have burst through the soil, and the fields teem with wild plants and organic weeds.
It’s a time for decisions and actions: choosing what to nurture and clearing away what no longer serves. The weeds must be removed to create space for the growth of the desired crops. Similarly, this season invites us to reflect on our personal ‘fields’—deciding what we wish to cultivate and sustain, and what we must let go of to foster healthy, fruitful growth.
Capac Raymi embodies the spirit of foresight and intentional care. By taking the right steps at the right time, we create opportunities for transformation, nurturing not only the seeds in our fields but also the seeds of a stronger, more harmonious society.
As we honor the energy of Capac Raymi here in the Andes and celebrate winter’s holidays in the North, may we recognize the shared themes of light, growth, and renewal that connect us across hemispheres. Just as the solstice marks transitions in the natural world, these festivities remind us to embrace change and cultivate what matters most in our lives.
Wishing you a season of reflection, action, and abundant growth—
Merry Capac Raymi and Happy Holidays!
