…because I was just beginning to understand the language”.
That was what I got from Johannes’s email after he landed in Berlin a couple of months after the pandemic began (I got this message and of course, a picture of a German beer).
Dear Spanish learner, use it or lose it.
Even if you are living far away like in Germany or the States you can keep your Spanish by practicing.
Johannes is an elementary teacher in Berlin, it is not the same to practice a language in a city where this language is not the native language, for instance, to practice Spanish in Berlin or Seattle, so Johannes exercises his Spanish with me.
Last week we talked about an Amazon legend from Ecuador, I thought it would be challenging for his oral skills however I was impressed with the result since this legend contains complex vocabulary even for a native speaker.
Whoever speaks with Johannes would bet that he is living in Ecuador or any other Spanish speaking country for 10 or 15 years. Nothing further from the truth. If I were allowed here to attach an audio, I would ask Johannes a permission to post it. but…
Anywhooo,

Wise investments:
1. Expensive dinners? a 12 dollar soup in a 100 tower restaurant? Sounds great!
2. Being able to speak confidently while traveling to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico like Johannes does? price-less…
(Even if you invested your whole year’s rent, it would still be worth it).
But this is just my biased opinion as a language teacher and as a second language learner as well. You have to test it on your own. You know, seeing is believing.
