    Don’t get caught flatfooted

It has been widely published that the El Nino season is upon us and will take some five months. In the Sierra this will mean severe and prolonged droughts. This will not only lead to drink water shortages but also shortages of (hydro) electricity.

So, my suggestion is to get prepared for blackouts. Don’t wait until they start to happen and get caught flatfooted when everybody starts to hunt for emergency lighting and the stores will inevitably sell out quickly. Candles are not the solution for this extended blackout season.

I looked online at Kywi and Coral and could hardly find anything, other than a flashlight. So, I went to the marketplace of Facebook for Cuenca and did a search for “lampara por camping recargable”. You might also search “lampara de mergencia recargable”.

I found a store on Augustin Cueva (just behind Subway on Remigio Crespo) who have stock of 30 rechargeable lights of 4″ diameter with 6 LEDs, for the price of $5.

Good hunting and try not to get caught with your proverbial pants down, when the serious blackouts start.

While we will see less rainfall and under severe conditions possibly even a power outage or 2 it's hardly worth panicking. We will not see a shortage of water. Most of you live in buildings with back up generators. For those who don't buy some candles.. Thanks to the poster... Maybe a bit overstated, but it never hurts to be prepared for emergencies. On my last trip to the states I picked up a portable solar cell with USB ports (Amazon). It's enough to recharge lights, cell phones, etc. 0 0

I guess I haven’t given the wise ass “men” time to get in their conspiracy comments, but they are already a few I see. I guess I haven’t given the wise ass “men” time to get in their conspiracy comments, but they are already a few I see. So it’s always good to be prepared, whatever you believe about forecasts or climate change. So if it happens you won’t be part of the mad rush to the Supermaxi. If you get your jollies from proving everyone wrong, or right, or whatever, then I suppose e we shall see. And since most of us reading this are retired expats (or hopefuls), and you don’t need AC or heat here, you can read during the day, and go to sleep at sunset. Light some candles, open some cans. Yup, don't forget to triple mask and get your fifteenth booster, while you're at it! Been here for two el niño events, including a "severe" one and noticed ZERO changes in either water or power. This sort of post seeks to drive fear. Calmate, Eric! 0 0

Very cool. Way to go, Mike. You are my hero for today. It's nice to know that we're not connected to the rest of the world's atmosphere, despite what these pointy-headed experts say: "El Niño impacts on SA feature a pattern with floods along the west coast of Ecuador and... 0 0

Thank you for being helpful and thoughtful in sharing what appears to be good advice. I am certainly not prepared for these two things-- water shortage and electric outages-- and have lived here long enough to heed warnings-- https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/feart.2020.00017/full 0 0
