Do the local markets intimidate or overwhelm you?

We can help change that and have a fun day as well! On June 24th, Hogar de Esperanza is having a market day. We will pair you up with a Spanish-speaking student from the University of Cuenca who is learning English. You will learn the Spanish words for items and you will teach the students the English words. For two hours, you will explore the market and find hidden treasures.

Aside from helping the students, you will learn about the different types of fruits, vegetables, and herbs available. Many that you have never heard of. We even know of a place to find egg noodles! You will learn all about Yapa and maybe even get some!

We will meet at the foundation for breakfast at 9 AM, included. We will then head over to the 10 de Agosto market. At 11:30 AM we will all meet up for hornado and enjoy this traditional lunch of succulent pork. There are other meal options available should you wish something different. You will be responsible for providing your student with lunch. A typical lunch cost $4.

You will be given instructions on unique things to find and some explanation about products you will find. You will explore the medicinal herbal sections, other sections of the market, as well as some of the stores outside the markets where you can find herbs, spices and flours at a fraction of the cost in the grocery store.

The cost is $10 per person and you can register here: https://foundationhogardeesperanza-bloom.kindful.com/e/find-your-treasures-in-the-market For other options to pay you can following links on our website or contact us for more information. https://hogaresperanza.org/en/donations/

After 9+ years here in my beloved Cuenca (not to mention bargaining in a gazillion local markets all over the globe for more than half my life!) the many mercados in Cuenca surely don't "intimidate" me in the least. Indeed, shopping among the colorful stalls of fresh fruits and veggies is not only great fun, but one of the best opportunities to practice my Spanish. lol, that said - I'm ashamed to say... it took me 2 YEARS to *finally* master the word for "carrots" (zanahorias)! :D Nonetheless I just signed up b/c I think Hogar's "market day" treasure hunt is sheer GENIUS! Most definitely a win-win-win for all, and I encourage all newcomers who might otherwise be a bit intimidated with living/shopping amid a new foreign language in their chosen adopted home, to sign up for a golden opportunity of fun and support of a great community organization. This is a great idea and an opportunity to become acquainted with buying in the open markets. The 10 de Agosto market has everything to offer but is not as intimidating as the Feria libre. The 10 de Agosto market has everything to offer but is not as intimidating as the Feria libre. It's also right there in town. Once a person has experienced the selection and freshness of foods in the markets, the prices, and the fun of buying in the midst of human interaction, trips to the supermaxi may become less frequent.
