Friendly reminder: use caution and don’t get scammed

For the most part, my experiences with the expat community have been good. This makes it easy to put one’s guard down, and someone I know did, and got scammed.

This is a reminder that if you don’t personally know someone, don’t send money by a mobile app, like VenMo, Zelle, Cash App, etc., on a promise that goods will be delivered.


Also, if you are thinking about giving to a charity request on social media, check out this advice from the US Federal Trade Commission: https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/giving-charity (or other trusted consumer publications).

Remember that even in a mostly-trustworthy community there may be wolves, and the usual cautions still— always— apply.

Thank you for the reminder. There are cases of scams by folks in Cuenca periodically. A most popular place for people to collect a windfall is to create a sad story and ask for donations on GoFundMe. Some are legitimate while many others are just for greed. 0 0
