    Cooking With Rey

Unlocking Cuenca’s secrets: Your advice needed for my upcoming visit!

I’m excited to share that I’ll be embarking on an exploratory trip to Cuenca after the second week of December this year. Having seen many of you successfully transition to this city, I’d greatly appreciate your insights and recommendations from your own experiences.

I’m eager to soak in all that Cuenca has to offer and get a comprehensive understanding of this place, which might become my future home. Your valuable suggestions will play a crucial role in shaping my itinerary and helping me explore the city to its fullest potential.

Please share any advice, whether it’s about must-visit places, neighborhoods to explore, rental and sale housing market, or any knowledge you’ve come across during your journey. Your collective wisdom will be a tremendous asset in planning my trip.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

Jodoco has the best beer in Ecuador. Cooking With Rey is one of the best restaurants. Most flavorful, I should say. 0 0

In my opinion, if you come with tourist eyes, you can easily fill the time visiting tourist stuff, but you really will not get a feel for what it is like to live here as a transplant. That can take weeks or more likely a few months. If you are moving to save money, remember too that this is not little USA or even close. I would keep an open mind about the good and not so good and weigh such a move carefully. As for touristy things to do, there are the churches, the amazing zoo, some decent restaurants, and other things that people will mention, but once you live here awhile that stuff fades into the background and you are back to day to day life. Good point about day to day life. Things like paying utility bills, dealing with landlords, purchasing appliances, getting a drivers license if you want one, getting your residency, etc. All of that and more will not be visible on a tourist visit. 0 0

Come prepared to fall in love with the city, and its people. If you do, then we can talk strategy. 0 0

My only suggestion is to make a prioritized list of what is important to you relative to why you are considering Cuenca as your future home. My only suggestion is to make a prioritized list of what is important to you relative to why you are considering Cuenca as your future home. For example, let's say you're interested in the arts and humanities. You would then try to plan to visit and attend galleries and shows. If you are someone that your place of residence helps to define you, then you should spend time reviewing the housing stock. If the food scene is important to you, then target the more popular places. I would join the Cuenca Facebook groups and read current and past posts. There's a wealth of information that you can get doing that. I would also target two or three areas and spend time walking those areas, poking your head into establishments and visiting with people along the way. Of course, many people take walking tours and ride the open tour buses. You don't say how long you will be here, but it takes time to get to really know a city as large as Cuenca. The best you can do is determine if Cuenca has the potential to meet your expectations. Read more 0 0

I'd second Jeff, with the proviso that if you think you might buy a place, give living here a year or two first. Get acquainted with the market, the culture, and the way that business actually works. The rules here are different than where you're from, and they aren't necessarily... I'd second Jeff, with the proviso that if you think you might buy a place, give living here a year or two first. Get acquainted with the market, the culture, and the way that business actually works. The rules here are different than where you're from, and they aren't necessarily followed. Also, for some general hints, see "One person's advice for visitors or new expats." at equitator•blogspot•com/2021/09/advice-for-cuenca•html (Replace • with . to make the URL work.) There are several small apartments at Hotel los Balcones where I live. Decent place for a short-term or long-term stay. See the above blog post. You could also look at Gran Colombia Suites at grancolombiasuites•com Never been in the place but it looks nice. There are lots of other options. Read more 0 0

If you're considering using professional assistance for real estate or a visa, I highly suggest checking out some of the recent posts regarding facilitators and lawyers. Making the wrong choice can have disastrous consequences, though it may not be immediately apparent. 0 0

Agree! Isabel Mosquera is the only one that doesn't charge anything until your visa is in hand. 0 0
