Real stories from the Hogar – When there is gold in those hills

They had a beautiful property in the Colombian hills. Enough income to provide for them and their four children. But then the guerillas moved in. There was gold in those hills, and everyone was forced to leave. Families like this one tried to fight back but had no support from the local authorities. Under threat of death and intimidation, they escaped to Ecuador. Not wanting to put their children through the stress of escape, they left them with family members until they could get established in Ecuador. With the economic situation in Ecuador difficult, they found themselves being homeless and living on the streets, sleeping on carboard boxes.

Their case was brought to us by the Municipality, and we were asked to assist. This is the distinctive approach of the Hogar. We do not give away things, we work with various agencies to find solutions to those facing emergency situations and provide exactly what they need. Our Social Worker will partner with them until their situation is resolved. In this case, we have found them work and we will provide them with accommodation and food until they have a stable situation, which we expect will be a few weeks.

If you wish the opportunity to assist families like this you can participate by contributing to our emergency appeal. or at: All this week we will be having a huge Garage Sale and Open House. You can visit us at Juan Montalvo 8-18 and Mariscal Sucre, email or call us. If you would like to participate by contributing items for our sale, please contact us. Thank you for your support and helping families in emergency situations.
