    Major Claro problem for expats

I am writing this as a service to local expats. No responses necessary, especially if you wish to challenge or debate this information.

I just returned from Claro after an attempt to update my Schwab Debit Card with a new expiration date. This is the exact same debit card I have used to pay Claro for the last 6-years. The only thing different is 4 new digits on the card, the new date and the security code. I just completed the same transaction with PuntoNet so, I know the problem is not with the card.

Claro rejected it, stating they want a local or international card, as if my Schwab card is not international! My response to Claro is not printable.

Just giving you a “heads up…”

Years ago I did this with Banco de Quayaquil all the time. When they switched to "readers" I had to get authorization for use in Ecuador. A card "reader" that reads the magnetic strip and communicates with your financial institution would have would have probably been a different story if it's not authorized for use in Ecuador. You can also pay Claro with the JEP app from your cell phone. Very quick and easy 0 0

Same thing happened to us last year. Said bye-bye, headed straight to Movistar. Easier, better deal, the same, or better, service. 0 0

"This is the exact same debit card I have used to pay Claro for the last 6-years." Wrong. That card expired as you said. New expiration date = New card I receive SS from the U.S. via a bank debit card. The card has to be authorized for use in Ecuador by the card issuer. When a card expires so does the authorization, and a new card requires a new authorization by the issuer. I'm in the process of doing this now with a new card and they want a "failed transaction" here in Ecuador on file before they'll authorize it for use here. In the mean time it works fine with PayPal, Amazon, etc. Read more 0 0
