Did you know that Foundation Hogar de Esperanza is a principal contact for the Vincente Corral Hospital to assist with premature babies and their mothers? We provide life-saving support for both the baby and the mother. The issues around premature babies are complicated. It takes a specialized team. We work with the hospital to provide medications, transportation and accommodation for the family. Even with our best efforts, a small percentage do not survive.
This past week a mother gave birth prematurely in the Amazon. The baby was rushed by ambulance to Cuenca but only lived about 5 days. The mother was distraught. Not only for the loss of her little girl but now she had to face a logistic nightmare that was impossible until the hospital called us. She also was alone in Cuenca and spoke little Spanish.
There was no time to register the birth, so the death could not be registered. The baby was born in another province so could not be registered in Cuenca. This is where the work of our patient coordinator, Oscar, and his contacts is so important. He was able to get the legal work done quickly to register the baby’s birth and death. We then provided the casket and Oscar accompanied her on the 12-hour journey back to her community. Although sad, she is happy that she is able to give her little girl a proper burial. Without your support, this would not have been possible.
