YouTube Vlogger in Quito robbed at gunpoint

Ryan and his wife Sarah were robbed at gunpoint in Quito. A bit of a fishy situation — they are leaving the country and her school (employer) forced her to close their bank account before they paid her. Then they had to go to a specific bank to withdraw cash. Then they got robbed. Very sad story. It seems they were set up.

I'm hearing some pretty negative things on this forum about Ecuadorians in general. People are people...most are good and some are not. The school is in question here...was it an international school does anyone know? I taught at two different international schools in Venezuela and our salaries were always direct deposited into our home country banks. This was starting in 2003 for me. I follow vlogs from people living in Mexico and there is a bank scheme there too. Someone is hanging out in the bank watching people do their banking while on their phone. When someone goes out to their car something may have been done to their car that will cause them to have to stop in a short period of time, making them sitting ducks. You just have to be wise, careful and vigilant at all times. In Ryan and Sarah's case, the school should never have set them up to have to carry all that cash in public. What a shame for them to go through this horrific experience. Bless them. Read more 0 0

I have an acquaintance who came to Ecuador with the Peace Corps more than 30years ago. There isn't a single Ecuadorian she trusts. They lie their faces off. The only economically isolated country in the world. 0 0

    100% correct about the lying. 0 0

My estate planner told me that Ecuador is the only country in the world with zero foreign investment. No country will do business with liars. 0 0

Their experience clearly illustrates some important realities of visiting and living in Ecuador. You can't totally trust anyone. Thievery is commonplace, though violent crime less so. That's why buildings and homes have bars on the windows. Thieves are cunning. Even though cell phone use is prohibited inside banks, thieves have ways of knowing when large deposits are withdrawn. A police escort is just temporary protection when significant cash is carried or stowed outside a bank vault. Ecuadorian institutions sometimes have screwy policies - like requiring a closed bank account to receive a final paycheck(?) Often times it's advantageous to question the policy and then plan accordingly. Most of the time, the police react to a crime by going through the motions without real commitment to solving it. Like a lot of other things here - after the fact, and even before, you're mostly on your own. The risks are all compounded when one doesn't speak the language. Read more 0 0

We have enjoyed Ryan and Sarah and have had mostly laughs watching their videos. This comes as quite a shock, especially the last video about the bank personnel possibly alerting the robbers. This comes as quite a shock, especially the last video about the bank personnel possibly alerting the robbers. And at gunpoint at their Uber, and Ryan's physical assault. We have discussed our physical safety once again, as this is a reminder to take care and be observant. It seems though that they did everything they could to be safe with such a large sum of money. We certainly hope that they can move on to Cambodia and put this behind them, but it seems that this event is somewhat defining their stay in Ecuador. Read more 0 0

Recently there was a post that said you can get a policeman to accompany you when you withdraw cash. I know it is too late now for this couple, but it is something that expats should be aware of. 0 0
