Following a question from a friend who is still outside Ecuador, he asked me if it is true that when you arrive in Ecuador, you receive 6 months of free tourist visa, so I explained to him this:
The first time you arrive in Ecuador, you receive 90 days as a tourist, not three months, I like always to ask my friends, clients, to count the days…
So, when the first 90 days expire, then, you can leave the country or extend your tourist visa for 90 days more, with a pretty simple process at the “Migration Police Office”, pay around $135 per person, and continue in Ecuador.
If you leave the country, when you are into the first 90 tourist visa, the “migration clock” stops, and you can use the rest of the 90 days in the chronological year until the date of your first arrival starts again.
If you leave the country, using the 90 days of your fist extension, the clock will not stop and continue running.
Every year, around the same time of your first arrival, you will receive a brand-new 90 days as a tourist.
Now, about the visa to live in Ecuador in a legal way.
There are many visas to be a legal resident in Ecuador. The most popular is the retirement visa, based on your Social Security income, the investor visa, putting $40,000 in a CD or buying a property with that value in the deed, plus $800 per dependent. And the professional visa, based in the university degree. In all these cases, some extra steps have to be done, in order to process and receive the visa.
All the visas are temporary visas and now allow multiple in and out of Ecuador, valid for 24 months, but, after 21 months you can apply for the permanent visa.
Also, with the visa, comes the “Ecuador ID card”, or cédula, as we call it here. It is an extra step to having the cédula. If you are 65 years old and more, you will have some extra benefits… like a top of 50% discounts on bus tickets, air tickets (before taxes) VAT payback and some more. And, even not having the cédula, and being 65 years old, the final visa price (government fee), normally around $500 plus $50 of paperwork fee, is half for seniors.
Seniors in Ecuador are people from 65 years old, or “Tercera Edad”, third age.
