Please help: young Kichwa woman urgently needs life-saving surgery

I wanted to share something important: A young Kichwa woman who lives in the Amazon urgently needs surgery to remove a tumor from her skull. She doesn’t have the funds or insurance to cover the cost, and the surgery needs to happen soon due to the tumor pressing against her brain.

My friend, Laurel, created a Go Fund Me page to help raise the necessary funds – please click the link below. If you’re able to contribute, even a small amount, it would make a huge difference. Thank you so much!

Help us support our orphanage

At our orphanage, we take care of 35 elderly residents and 20 young girls, we feed them every single day, along with our dedicated volunteers and staff. Today, we humbly ask for your continued support through donations. Here’s what we urgently need:

Food:

We cook for over 50 people daily. Any type of food is a blessing. Not expired.

Clothing:

We accept all sizes and styles—t-shirts, jackets, pants, shoes—nothing goes to waste. Every piece finds a purpose.

Household items and appliances:

Kitchen tools, small or large appliances—we put everything to good use.

Furniture:

Beds, mattresses, sofas, desks, dining tables, anything you no longer need can help us create a warm, functional space. We have several rooms where an extra bed or mattress would mean a good night’s rest. Desks help our girls with their studies. Dining sets give our elderly and girls a place to share meals in dignity.

Computers and school supplies:

Computers are essential tools for the girls’ education. Any working equipment or school materials are appreciated.

Cleaning supplies:

Keeping our home clean is a daily effort, we welcome all types of cleaning products.

Cash donations:

Every dollar helps us cover food, shelter, and other essential needs. You can make cash donations or any kind of financial support.

Our girls sell humitas and tamales at the orphanage to raise money for their school expenses. Come support them!

If you would like to help, please contact Mike. He can organize a pickup of your donation—or you’re welcome to drop it off directly at the orphanage. Your generosity brings hope, comfort, and dignity to every soul in our care.

Thank you for standing with us

Toy donations create first Christmas smiles for children in Saraguro

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your generous toy donations.

Each year, this initiative fills us with deep emotion and renewed hope.

This year, we had the privilege of visiting four different communities in Saraguro, where many children had never received a toy at Christmas before. For these children, this was their first experience of receiving a Christmas gift, and the joy they expressed was truly moving.

The smiles captured in these photos and videos are a direct result of your generosity. Thanks to your support, we were able to create meaningful moments of happiness and lasting memories for each child.

We would also like to congratulate the winners of our special prizes, and sincerely thank them for being part of this meaningful initiative:

• First Prize: Dental Whitening – $200

Winner: Karen Hicks

• Second Prize: $150 toward any dental treatment

Winner: Amelia Sanchez

• Third Prize: Dental Check-up and Cleaning – $110

Winner: Linda Sorrento

Thank you once again for your kindness.

Grace Youth Orchestra needs your help!

The Grace Foundation a 501c3 nonprofit started the Grace Youth Orchestra (GYO) over a year ago. Currently there are over 40 children enrolled in the orchestra between the ages of 7 and 17. The children, who otherwise could not afford music lessons or instruments are currently learning to sing, play guitars, cuatros and ukuleles, violins, violas, and percussion instruments. Both migrant children and local Cuencanos belong to orchestra, thereby building a bride between many cultures. El Sistema, a program started over 50 years ago in Venezuela, to address youth gang violence and drug use has spread throughout the world, with over a 100 programs in the USA. The GYO has adopted the El Sistema model and several of the music instructors were in the program in Venezuela.

Due to the rapid increase in the size of the GYO, which was based upon the needs of children and the popularity of being part of team of committed musicians, we are need of instruments and/or donations. We know that many people have an instrument that they are no longer using that would be a great addition to the GYO. In addition to the above instruments, we are also needing a cello, some flutes and any other instrument that you could donate. If you do not have an instrument, then a financial donation would be greatly appreciated.

By donating you will be helping children: Integrate and contribute in their community, gain confidence through performance, be part of a healthy environment, develop leadership skills and improve academic success. If you become a monthly donor, you will also be able to become a founding member of the orchestra. Thank you for making Christmas, not only a time of great joy, but also a time to make music. Our next concerts are at: The Cultural Center at 7:30 PM on December 18, and at 3 PM on December 20. Feel free to bring instruments or other donations to the concert.

Seeking for used books!

Hello dear Cuenca community!

I’m reaching out to ask for your support with a small but meaningful project. I’m collecting donations of books in English—any genre, any level—to help promote English learning through reading.

If you have novels, children’s books, educational books, classics, or any titles you no longer use, they can make a big difference for people who are eager to learn and improve their English skills through accessible reading material.

Pickup or drop-off can be coordinated easily.

Feel free to contact me if you’d like to donate or need more details.

Thank you for supporting education and helping build opportunities through reading!

Support the children and elders of Miguel León Orphanage this Christmas season

Christmas season is approaching, a time of generosity, unity, and compassion. As we prepare for this special time of year, we kindly invite you to help us continue a tradition that has brought joy and dignity to many lives.

Last Christmas, thanks to the heartfelt collaboration of many generous individuals, we were able to give every girl at the Miguel León Orphanage a meaningful gift: a warm jacket, shoes, clothing, personal hygiene products, T-shirts, and pants. Your kindness made that celebration unforgettable.

This year, we hope to give them the same love-filled gifts and we need your support to make it possible again.

Our home currently cares for 20 girls and 36 elderly residents, all of whom rely on us for daily meals, school expenses, and essential care. We provide five meals a day to ensure their health and well-being, and your contributions play an essential role in sustaining this mission.

We are currently in need of:

• Food and kitchen ítems (Non expired)

• Clothing and shoes

• Furniture and home goods

• Computers and school supplies

• Anything that can bring warmth, comfort, and joy

Your generosity helps us create a warm, nurturing environment where every child and elder feels loved, respected, and supported. This Christmas, your compassion can bring hope and happiness to those who need it most.

How you can help:

You may drop off donations at our facilities or contact us to arrange a convenient delivery. If you are unable to donate items, simply sharing this message can make a meaningful difference.

Thank you for opening your heart this holiday season. Together, we can make Christmas brighter for the girls and elders of Miguel León Orphanage.

Giving new purpose to items you no longer need

What happens to your donations of clothing and household items at Hogar de Esperanza? First and foremost, your donations are provided directly to individuals and families in our community who are most in need. We carefully ensure that each item reaches someone for whom it will make a meaningful difference.

Any additional items that remain after these direct donations are sold in our Esperanza Thrift Shop. All proceeds from sales at the thrift shop go directly back into supporting Hogar de Esperanza’s vital programs and services, continuing our mission to assist those facing poverty, illness, and other challenging situations.

Are you moving soon—whether across town, to another city, or perhaps returning to your home country? Do you have items left over after your moving sale or belongings you simply can’t take with you? Let us help you turn these extra items into powerful support for those in need.

We gladly accept all types of donations. You can drop off your items at the Expat Services Center, located at 9-78 Juan Montalvo, between Bolivar and Gran Colombia, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4:30 PM.

We also offer convenient pick-up services for your donations. To schedule a pick-up or inquire further, please contact us—we’re here to make it easy for you to make a difference.

Help for woman who has no food, looking for job

I met a woman the other day who has just moved to Cuenca looking for a job. She has rented a room, no furniture, no kitchen and has no food most days. I just found this out.

Is there a soup kitchen in Cuenca that can help her? Does anyone have any resources she can contact or perhaps a job for her?

We are not in a position to give her a job. Is there a charity that can help her out? Thank you so much.

Christmas tree and decorations needed for Miguel León Orphanage

This holiday season, we kindly ask for your support in bringing joy and warmth to the girls and elderly of Miguel León Orphanage. We are hoping to receive the donation of a Christmas tree and holiday decorations to help create a festive and loving environment for the little ones who call this place home.

Your generosity can light up not only a room, but the hearts of children who deserve to feel the magic and hope that Christmas brings. Even the smallest contribution can make a big difference.

If you feel called to share a bit of love and Christmas spirit, please reach out.

Together, we can make this season brighter for these wonderful children.
