Giving new purpose to items you no longer need

What happens to your donations of clothing and household items at Hogar de Esperanza? First and foremost, your donations are provided directly to individuals and families in our community who are most in need. We carefully ensure that each item reaches someone for whom it will make a meaningful difference.

Any additional items that remain after these direct donations are sold in our Esperanza Thrift Shop. All proceeds from sales at the thrift shop go directly back into supporting Hogar de Esperanza’s vital programs and services, continuing our mission to assist those facing poverty, illness, and other challenging situations.

Are you moving soon—whether across town, to another city, or perhaps returning to your home country? Do you have items left over after your moving sale or belongings you simply can’t take with you? Let us help you turn these extra items into powerful support for those in need.

We gladly accept all types of donations. You can drop off your items at the Expat Services Center, located at 9-78 Juan Montalvo, between Bolivar and Gran Colombia, Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 4:30 PM.

We also offer convenient pick-up services for your donations. To schedule a pick-up or inquire further, please contact us—we’re here to make it easy for you to make a difference.

Looking for home care/home help

I’m looking for help with my wife who has early dementia. She is not at a point where she needs full nursing care; more like someone that can be a helper to her and also do light house-cleaning, cooking, etc. To start, it would be a half day, 3 to 4 days a week until she gets comfortable with the helper. Once my wife gets comfortable the hours would increase. Some English would be a big plus.

Amigos de los Niños is Looking for Volunteers

We are an organization whose purpose is to help mothers who are returning to school to finish their high school education. We care for their children free of charge while they are in evening classes. (otherwise the children would have to go to class with their mothers).

We employ a professional, degreed pre-school teacher 5 nights a week. In addition, our team of volunteers provide a nutritious meal and support for the teacher every evening during the school year.

The school meets on Monday through Friday evenings. Our volunteers arrive at the school at 6 PM and stay until about 8 PM. The school is located in El Centro at Gran Columbia and Padre Aguirre.

Reach out if this is something you would like to try.

Chris Knseco – Spanish tutor

If you are learning Spanish and are at a point where you would like to try a private tutor, I can recommend Chris Knseco. I’ve been working with Chris for almost a year and it has significantly increased my ability to speak basic Spanish. Chris has a unique technique that helps you speak conversational Spanish quickly and efficiently. Of course, there are no shortcuts and your results may vary depending on your situation but Chris is an excellent tutor. I also want to mention that his English is very good so he explains the rules clearly. His hourly rates are very affordable and Chris is punctual.

Cuenca’s orphanage needs your help

If you’re not familiar with Hogar Miguel León, it has been in existence for 150 years and currently houses 19 girls between the ages of 3 and 17 as well as 35 elders. The seven nuns work tirelessly to provide for the people who live there providing them with shelter, clothing, food, education, health care and stability.

The building is an ancient patrimonial house that is constructed mostly of wood. The city, rightly so, has mandated that the building is in need of a fire prevention system throughout. Considering how old the building is, a fire would be an unspeakable tragedy. The estimated costs for these repairs is $300,000. It involves an enormous amount of retrofitting and re-wiring. Currently, the sisters are doing repairs in increments as they have funds available.

This is a dire need and something that needs to be addressed immediately. If you can help, please contact me at the email below and I will provide you with the banking information for contributions. Any amount is greatly appreciated.

Help family resettle in Ecuador

Last July, while traveling back to Cuenca, I met Silvia and her young son Douglas. They had just been deported from the US after living there for 4 years. The deportation was sudden, with no notice, and they were forced to leave behind their work, school, and belongings.

I’m sharing their GoFundMe for those who may feel moved to support them as they rebuild their lives here in Ecuador. I don’t know all the details of their current needs, but I do know they are kind, decent people navigating a very abrupt transition.

If you’re able and willing to help, I had trouble posting the link so please go to Go Fund Me and search for “Help us to settle in Ecuador after we have been deported”.

Thank you for reading and for any support you may choose to offer.

Toy donations create first Christmas smiles for children in Saraguro

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for your generous toy donations.

Each year, this initiative fills us with deep emotion and renewed hope.

This year, we had the privilege of visiting four different communities in Saraguro, where many children had never received a toy at Christmas before. For these children, this was their first experience of receiving a Christmas gift, and the joy they expressed was truly moving.

The smiles captured in these photos and videos are a direct result of your generosity. Thanks to your support, we were able to create meaningful moments of happiness and lasting memories for each child.

We would also like to congratulate the winners of our special prizes, and sincerely thank them for being part of this meaningful initiative:

• First Prize: Dental Whitening – $200

Winner: Karen Hicks

• Second Prize: $150 toward any dental treatment

Winner: Amelia Sanchez

• Third Prize: Dental Check-up and Cleaning – $110

Winner: Linda Sorrento

Thank you once again for your kindness.

Grace Youth Orchestra needs your help!

The Grace Foundation a 501c3 nonprofit started the Grace Youth Orchestra (GYO) over a year ago. Currently there are over 40 children enrolled in the orchestra between the ages of 7 and 17. The children, who otherwise could not afford music lessons or instruments are currently learning to sing, play guitars, cuatros and ukuleles, violins, violas, and percussion instruments. Both migrant children and local Cuencanos belong to orchestra, thereby building a bride between many cultures. El Sistema, a program started over 50 years ago in Venezuela, to address youth gang violence and drug use has spread throughout the world, with over a 100 programs in the USA. The GYO has adopted the El Sistema model and several of the music instructors were in the program in Venezuela.

Due to the rapid increase in the size of the GYO, which was based upon the needs of children and the popularity of being part of team of committed musicians, we are need of instruments and/or donations. We know that many people have an instrument that they are no longer using that would be a great addition to the GYO. In addition to the above instruments, we are also needing a cello, some flutes and any other instrument that you could donate. If you do not have an instrument, then a financial donation would be greatly appreciated.

By donating you will be helping children: Integrate and contribute in their community, gain confidence through performance, be part of a healthy environment, develop leadership skills and improve academic success. If you become a monthly donor, you will also be able to become a founding member of the orchestra. Thank you for making Christmas, not only a time of great joy, but also a time to make music. Our next concerts are at: The Cultural Center at 7:30 PM on December 18, and at 3 PM on December 20. Feel free to bring instruments or other donations to the concert.
