It was at The Oro Verde Hotel in Cuenca, Ecuador, where the U.S, Embassy July 4th “Mission to Ecuador” event took place. American Ambassador, Michael Fitzpatrick and Brian Quigley, Consulate General, delivered a business contract to Star Singer and the date was set. Formal invitations were sent out to dignitaries and top business people of Cuenca. Star Singer was thrilled to be the hired entertainment.

It really was quite an event. To start things off, the event’s Producer peered over at Star Singer who was positioned at his microphone and the Producer gave Star Singer a little nod which meant begin. Star Singer arpeggioed a strong G chord on his acoustic guitar. That simple sound, one arpeggio of a simple G chord reverberated throughout the ballroom. Somehow the spirit and intention of that “report” must have, in some way, been appreciated and respected. For at that very moment, everything went quiet. All, absolutely everybody, stopped talking and looked at Star Singer. you could hear a pin drop. Star Singer sang “The Star-Spangled Banner”, the national anthem for The United States of America. That is what opened the evening’s ceremony. Star Singer sang the national anthem beautifully. Three U.S. Marines, in formal uniforms, carried the American flag to the dais performing colors. Mayor of Cuenca, Pedro Palacios, was there, the president of The Abraham Lincoln Cultural Center was there with his beautiful daughter… just about anybody who was anybody was there at that embassy event!

Star Singer, in his classic tuxedo waited. He was watching the audience. The audience was watching the Marines. When the Marine Corps Color Guard ceremony concluded, Star Singer began his entertainment set. It was showtime! The festivities had begun!

The first song was carefully chosen. While Star Singer is famous for performing his highly controversial original songs of freedom and human dignity, he knew that singing for the embassy dignitaries and sophisticates would best be served by performing middle-of-the-road popular songs known internationally. Star Singer decided to play it safe. The opening number was John Denver’s “Country Roads” (Take Me Home Country Roads). People loved it! The follow-up tune was, Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”. Things were rolling. Happy people mingling, talking, having cocktails and having great fun. Star Singer segued into “Those Were The Days My Friend”.

The event was in full force. It dawned on Star Singer that the host of this fabulous “Mission to Ecuador” event, the American Ambassador, Michael J. Fitzpatrick, is of Irish lineage. So, Star Singer, feeling it would be great fun, decided to belt out a classic rendition of “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling”! In the middle of that song, Ms. Olga Bashbush, public relations agent for the embassy, mounted the podium. She leaned into her microphone as she turned her head to Star Singer who was nearby. They locked eyes. She passed her fingers across her throat; a strong signal that telegraphed to Star Singer that he should stop singing and strumming. It was time for the speeches.

The first speech was made by Brian Quigley, U.S. Embassy to Ecuador Consulate General out of Guayaquil. Mr. Quigley certainly surprised Star Singer. And he certainly put a smile Star Singer’s face. In addressing the crowd for his short speech, Mr. Quigley publicly and officially thanked Star Singer for excellent entertainment!

The speeches were well received. The people in the audience applauded. The elegant party was winding up and coming to a close. Trays of wine and cocktails were still circulating. A man approached Star Singer and said he was so moved by Star Singer’s vocal rendition of the national anthem that tears welled up in the man’s eyes. All in all, a wonderful and memorable night. A great time was had by all!
