Pulmonary rehabilitation for COPD and chronic breathing problems

If you have COPD, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or breathlessness that keeps you from doing what you used to do, pulmonary rehabilitation is one of the best-supported treatments in respiratory medicine — and it isn’t a medication.

An honest word about what it does: it will not change your lung function tests. What it reliably improves is how breathless you feel, how far you can walk, and how much of your life you get back. For most people, that is the part that matters.

I completed my medical degree this year, graduating near the top of my class, and I have nearly ten years of clinical experience in rehabilitation. For chronic respiratory disease that matters, because most people with COPD also have something else — heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis — and the program has to account for all of it. I also know how to recognize an exacerbation early, and when you need your physician rather than another session.

What the program includes:

• Assessment of your current functional capacity

• Progressive exercise training — the core of the program and the part that produces the results

• Strength work for the muscles that fail first

• Breathing techniques and energy conservation for daily activities

• Education on recognizing a flare-up early

• Coordination with your treating physician

Two things I commit to: First, everything I use has evidence behind it — if a technique doesn’t have research supporting it, I won’t sell it to you. Second, I aim for the best result in the fewest sessions, not the most. If you no longer need me, I will tell you.
