Saturday, March 7th – “They Won’t Believe Me”, a black-and-white 1947 drama, starring Robert Young as an adulterous husband married to a wealthy woman who chases after Susan Hayward and Jane Greer. “They Won’t Believe Me” was produced by Alfred Hitchcock’s longtime assistant and collaborator Joan Harrison, accounting for its surprise twist ending and Hitchcock qualities.
Critic Dennis Schwartz in a 2003 review called the film “An outstanding film noir melodrama whose adultery tale is much in the same nature as a Hitchcock mystery or James M. Cain’s gritty Double Indemnity.” Cast against type, Young manages to be a likable and sympathetic total cad.
The movie opens at the murder trial of Larry Ballantine (Young), accused of murdering his wife Greta (Rita Johnson) while cheating on her with two other women. The rest of the movie is a flashback to the events leading to the discovery of his wife’s body, with the surprise ending taking place back in the courtroom at the end of Ballantine’s trial.
