Join us every Saturday, afternoon for classic movies – these are hard-to-find movies that aren’t easily streamed.
Saturday, February 28th – “On the Waterfront”, the award-winning 1954 drama in glorious black and white, stars Marlon Brando, Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger. Directed by Elia Kazan, “On the Waterfront” lays bare the human cost of corruption, labor union violence, extortion and racketeering among longshoremen.
Marlon Brando is Terry Malloy, a longshoreman who was a promising boxer until pressured to tank an important fight by his older brother Charley Malloy (Rod Steiger), the right-hand man to corrupt union local boss Johnny Friendly (Lee J. Cobb), who tries to protect his younger brother as Terry wrestles with his conscience, with tragic consequences.
Nominated for twelve and winning eight Oscars, On the Waterfront is ranked number 19 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest American movies of all time as well as is on the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. The Academy Award-nominated haunting musical score by Leonard Bernstein accentuates the action, and the location filming in Hoboken, New Jersey lends authenticity to the story.
