Join us every Saturday afternoon for classic movies – these are hard-to-find movies that aren’t easily streamed
Saturday February 21th – “Double Indemnity”, the classic 1944 film noir starring Fred MacMurray, Edward G. Robinson and Barbara Stanwyck. Directed by Billy Wilder, “Double Indemnity” tells the story of an insurance salesman (MacMurray) seduced by an unhappy wife (Stanwyck) to get rid of her husband. Naturally, being an insurance salesman, MacMurray’s character knows just how to maximize the payout on the husband’s death – an accident on a common carrier, which will pay double.
The casting for this picture is brilliant – usual good guy MacMurray becomes a murderer, and usual bad guy/gangster Robinson is a good guy, the claims manager who suspects that something is just not right.
Nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Music (Miklos Rosza), Double Indemnity is on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest American movies of all time.
