The Grace Foundation a 501c3 nonprofit started the Grace Youth Orchestra (GYO) over a year ago. Currently there are 42 children enrolled in the orchestra between the ages of 7 and 17. The children, who otherwise could not afford music lessons or instruments are currently learning to sing, play guitars, cuatros, ukuleles, violins, violas, and percussion instruments. Both migrant children and local Cuencanos belong to orchestra, thereby building a bride between many cultures. El Sistema, a program started over 50 years ago in Venezuela, to address youth gang violence and drug use has spread throughout the world, with over a 100 programs in the USA. The GYO has adopted the El Sistema model and several of the music instructors were in the program in Venezuela.
Due to the rapid increase in the size of the GYO, which was based upon the needs of children and the popularity of being part of team of committed musicians, we are need of instruments and/or donations. We know that many people have an instrument that they are no longer using that would be a great addition to the GYO. In addition to the above instruments, we are also needing a cello, some flutes and any other instrument that you could donate. If you do not have an instrument, then a financial donation would be greatly appreciated.
By donating you will be helping children: Integrate and contribute in their community, gain confidence through performance, be part of a healthy environment, develop leadership skills and improve academic success. If you become a monthly donor, you will also be able to become a founding member of the orchestra. Thank you for making Christmas, not only a time of great joy, but also a time to make music. Our next concerts are at: Cultural Center at 7:30 PM on December 18, and at 3 PM on December 20. Feel free to bring instruments or other donations to the concert.
