Explore the vibrant musical traditions that have shaped Latin America’s cultural identity and made an impact around the globe. This Cultura Viva Spanish class delves into the genres, movements, and artists that transformed the continent’s musical landscape and left their mark worldwide.
The course covers Argentine tango, born in the working-class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires and Montevideo; Caribbean reggaeton and salsa; cumbia with its Afro-Indigenous roots; and Latin rock, featuring iconic bands such as Soda Stereo, Caifanes, and Café Tacuba, along with modern fusions. You’ll learn how music has served as a powerful vehicle for expressing identity, responding to social change, and connecting communities.
To finish off the course, Cuban musician and dance instructor Yunior Hernandez will share his expertise on various Latin American rhythms. Yunior will guide a lively discussion and rhythm demonstrations (you might even pick up a new dance step or two!), offering a fun, interactive way to connect Spanish with the sounds and culture of Latin America.
Throughout the course, students will practice Spanish through guided listening, lyric analysis, rhythm exercises, and collaborative projects, linking language learning with the cultural, historical, and social dimensions of Latin American music.
