My trip to the Galapagos was the adventure of a lifetime because of the planning and attention to detail my guide, Alex Arregui, provided. I was part of a tour group but Alex was able to customize my experience so that I could do everything I wanted. Alex ensured I was always taken care even when I explored independently from the official tour.
For example, I was able to visit North Seymour Island to get up close to the exotic Blue Footed Boobies. On my special trip to the rugged Bartolomé Island I saw a pod of dolphins leaping through the surf, a penguin in the Northern Hemisphere, a friendly young sea lion climb upon the boat landing to touch us, and exotic plant life growing out of the hard volcanic soil! Speaking of volcanoes, one of the high points on Santa Cruz Island was exploring a lava tube cave before encountering enormous tortoises freely grazing in the high-land fields. At the Charles Darwin Research Station where Alex Arregui did scientific research as a young man, we saw the saddleback tortoises endemic to the low lands. I found both Isabela and Floreana Islands to be very relaxing places far from the more busy Santa Cruz and San Cristobal Islands.
But the trip wasn’t only about sightseeing on land and water. Alex arranged for our lodging at really nice places and took us to some delicious restaurants where we dined on freshly caught fish and seafood found only in the Galapagos Islands! Good friendships were formed over excellent craft beer and wine local to the archipelago.
