I was a scared and reluctant beginning Spanish student. I flunked the only language class I ever took, I couldn’t speak a word of Spanish beyond “Frito Bandito,” and I had never learned a foreign language or been out of the United States in all my 70 years. Furthermore, I am plagued with learning disabilities and memory issues.
I found Fausto through Idiomart, where Fausto’s wife also teaches. Fausto lived in the United States for 10 years, has taught Spanish for 25 years, written a Spanish handbook, and likes Gringos and Gringas. Fausto’s bright spirit, kind heart, friendliness, smarts, sense of humor, optimism, natural teaching skills, keen observation of student needs and strengths, flexible tailoring of lessons, and mastery of conversational and grammatical Spanish made him the perfect teacher for a beginner like me.
He has really helped me with the practical uses of language, like giving a taxi driver directions to my house, buying and selling, medical care, phone numbers and addresses, and asking for help. In the course of teaching Spanish, this part-time tour guide has also explained to me the history, customs, special events, and culture of Cuenca and Ecuador.
I admire his values as a father, husband, community volunteer, and joyous fun human. He is affordable and comes to my house to teach me twice a week. The amazing thing: I have actually learned to speak Spanish out there in the real world! Thank you, Fausto!
