Don’t forget, you can always swing by during our regular hours to visit the artists in their studios, have a cup of coffee, sit on the couch, read a book, visit with friends…just hang out!

Monday, Oct. 9
Death Café with Michelle Puga
*This is the third gathering of the Death Café, where you’re invited to come and talk about death in a safe and positive environment.

Friday, Oct. 13
Art Opening: Gabriela Bernál (“Maleza”) and Esteban Valdivia (“Visiones Sonoras”)
*Gaby’s exhibit, “Maleza” is a delicate yet bold exploration of the importance and beauty of weeds (maleza) in a garden. Are they weeds that need to be pulled or are they important teachers that need to be nourished?
*Esteban’s exhibition, “Visiones Sonoras” is a stunning display of ancestral ceramic instruments that are replicas found in museums throughout the Americas. He has been allowed to X-Ray ancient artifacts in order to learn how they work, then create replicas that transport us to another time.

Textile Collage Workshop (Arpillera)
*Learn the techniques of Chilean applique and embroidery called “Arpilleras”, which originated as a form of protest against the Pinochet Regime. Using recycled fabrics and textile materials, you will create a collage to tell a story. No previous experience required!

Thursday, Oct. 19
Concert with Esteban Valdivia: Ancestral Sounds of Pre-Columbian Ecuador
*Take a journey of the ancestral sounds of Ecuador with archaeomusicologist Esteban Valdivia. For more than a decade, Esteban has been researching Pre-Colombian music and instruments focusing on the Northern Andes region with an emphasis on Ecuadorian cultures. In this concert, he will unlock the secrets of ancestral Ecuador and perform with a variety of instruments that have survived the passage of time.

Saturday, Oct. 21
Saturday Salon Lecture: Quitaqui – The Center of Sound
*Archaeomusicologist Esteban Valdivia will discuss the sounds of ancient Ecuadorian cultures and how their instruments represent the wisdom of the time. The ancient ceramicists’ task was to reflect the knowledge of the stars on the earth plane, and they did this by engraving a series of symbols into the clay which related the sounds to the stars. You will not only learn about the sounds these instruments make but also about their astronomical importance in the region.

Oct. 24 – Nov. 9 (Every Tuesday)
Danzando con la Bestia Taller (Express Your Inner Animal Voice)
*Through conscious movement exercises, Alejandro Endara will guide the group to connect the body and voice with the power of animals to awaken and recognize in us various inner forces such as patience, the capacity for transformation, vision, strategy, love, gentleness, etc. We will take a trip to study the behavior of 6 animals: the butterfly, the snake, the turtle, the hummingbird, the puma, and the condor. Through exercises and techniques of contemporary dance, theater, singing, and creative writing we will summon in our body-mind-spirit the strength of these animals and be able to recreate their qualities in our daily lives. This workshop is in Spanish.

Thursday, Oct. 26
Bilingual Storytelling Event
*Our first bilingual storytelling event last month was a huge success and we can’t wait for this month’s! We will have stories in both Spanish and English and between each story, we’ll take a minute to make sure everyone understood what was said. Karla Freeman will also do a half an hour introduction and tips circle where you can come and learn a few tricks of the trade!

Scary Fairies Workshop
* Just in time for Halloween! Join Ruth Morris for another fun-filled art doll workshop! In this workshop you will make 2 posable 12 inch-tall Scary Fairy dolls. Make your dolls one of a kind selecting from a variety of freaky fairy heads, fiber, and tulle.

Cultural Road Trip: Archaeological Ruins
*Join CCC Spanish for another incredible cultural road trip. This time you will visit the ancient ruins of Ingapirca, some of the only known ruins with a combination of Inca and Cañari architecture. Then travel to the lesser-known ruins of Coyocter, or the Baño del Inca.

Tullpuna Art Club: Halloween / Día de los Difuntos
*Artist Cristian Leon is guiding another incredible art club where you have the choice of painting on canvas or a ceramic plate. Every person has their own creation station complete with easel, paint, and brushes and this month you will be inspired by the Día de los Difuntos or Halloween!

Patio Sessions Concert: SonCover from Venezuela
*This concert is going to be an incredible afternoon of Latin American music with Venezuelan musicians who are fairly new to Cuenca. Their repertoire is vast and their skill is world-class. This concert is sure to get your toe tapping and get some of you out of your seat dancing to the beats!
