Overview
The head is one of the most complex forms of the human body. But in 2019, artists have more of an advantage than in any other preceding period of time. Throughout history, many artists and anatomists have broken down the human head into digestible proportions, simplified 3D forms, and constructive drawing formulas. As modern day artists, we have an entire body of knowledge behind us to guide us in creating beautiful drawings and portraits. In this course, we’ll learn some of these formulas and learn how to create expressive portraits with character and emotion.
This class is for intermediate artists, or beginners looking to advance their skills to the intermediate level.
Each class will begin with a lecture and demonstrations. This course has a heavy emphasis on line drawing, proportions, perspective, and the constructive drawing process. We’ll be working from several still life drawing aids and photographs, using repetition to internalize this method of drawing. Students are encouraged to study Drawing the Head and Hands by Andrew Loomis and practice outside of class.
This two-week course is 4 sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-3 PM.

Session 1: Drawing the Loomis Head-Construction
During the golden age of illustration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Andrew Loomis established and taught a formulaic approach to drawing the human head. From the writings of Di Vinci and other great masters, he compiled and simplified multiple observations into a step-by-step approach to drawing the head. In this first course, we’ll learn the first steps of the Loomis method to create somewhat of a wire frame, on which we can later add features. This is the blueprint for building a portrait.
Session 2: Drawing the Loomis Head-Features
In this class, we’ll build on top of what we’ve learned from the Loomis method. We’ll discuss the planes of the face, proportions, and features. We will also talk about how we can “sculpt” features like noses, eyes, and lips from simpler forms like cylinders, prisms, and spheres.
Session 3-4: Portraits from Reference
In these classes, we’ll be learning a heavily guided method for drawing from reference. Using a grid and propotions, students will transfer the construction of a printed photo onto a gridded sheet of paper.
