As part of our October art exhibition, we are pleased to offer two incredible cultural activities that dive into the mystery and wonder of ancient Ecuador. Archaeomusicologist, Esteban Valdivia, will have a concert and a cultural lecture next week. Details below…
Concert with Esteban Valdivia: Ancestral Sounds of Pre-Columbian Ecuador
*Take a journey of the ancestral sounds of Ecuador. For more than a decade, Esteban has been researching Pre-Colombian music and instruments focusing on the Northern Andes region with an emphasis on Ecuadorian cultures. In this concert, he will unlock the secrets of ancestral Ecuador and perform with a variety of instruments that have survived the passage of time. Whistles, ocarinas, flutes, anthropomorphic sound statuettes, and whistling vessels will be some of the many flutes that will be presented at the concert. All these sounds will allow us to feel the history of this equatorial treasure and will help us better understand the profound wisdom of this beautiful country we call Ecuador.

Saturday Salon Lecture: Quitaqui – The Center of Sound
*Learn about the sounds of ancient Ecuadorian cultures and how their instruments represent the wisdom of the time. The ancient ceramicists’ task was to reflect the knowledge of the stars on the earth plane, and they did this by engraving a series of symbols into the clay which related the sounds to the stars. You will not only learn about the sounds these instruments make but also about their astronomical importance in the region.
