Gabriela, aged 23, was in such distress for someone so young, that she didn’t know where to begin when we asked for her story. She lives with her mother, and they both support themselves as street vendors. They had been out of work for 2 months. Her 4-year-old son had recently suffered an appendix rupture, and now has to use a colostomy bag. Just after he was released from the hospital, he had to go back to have a serious ear infection treated. And she and her mother had no food for days. She was so overburdened, so quiet, so hopeless. And then so relieved when we presented her with a one week food kit, and a little race car for her boy. So appreciative when we offered to help her check on her son at the hospital, to ensure that he receives the best care possible. We told Gabriela to come visit us again, any time she found herself in such need, and we would be here to listen and to help.
At Hogar de Esperanza, we see so many others in similar, dire situations. However, with your generous support, we were able to provide support to over 450 individuals last week. We distributed food kits, cooked meals, gave away clothes and shoes, and provided medicines. To those most vulnerable, and feeling reduced by the difficulties of their current situation during the crisis. Call it privilege, or call it luck, but while many of us have never been in their shoes, we have all experienced those tough times in life where we feel nearly defeated. So, in turn, we can sympathize with them. We can be that break, that help, that hope for them. And we could not do any of this without you – together, we can continue providing that hope to those who need it most.
