In December, 2021 I went to see my Endocrinologist, Dra. Rosanna Polo Torres, as I have hypothyroidism. Dr. Polo is highly knowledgeable, very personable, she speaks English and above all, she is honest. During my appointment, I explained that I had recently been having problems with my knees for about 6 months, they were periodically getting swollen. I was under the care of a doctor who apparently had performed/organized a surgery for me to have arthroscopic lateral knee surgery, October 2020. In addition, I was having abdominal pain, tingling sensations below my knees that later expanded throughout my body. I was told by this doctor that the treatment that I was receiving after the surgery would take time. But I felt uncomfortable and questions would arise as even a year after my surgery, I would have issues with my knees still. Why were they swollen? I was also being treated for a herniated disc, illiac crest pain (lower back pain), and neck pain.
As I described this to Dra. Pollo, she immediately made an appointment for me with Dr. Marco Carrion. She assured me that he was professional and highly praised for being an excellent doctor. The next day, he examined me and requested a current x-ray of my knees. He confirmed the problems in my neck, spine, hips and spine, but the reason for my swollen knees was due to the fact that I had developed “tilted knee caps”. Dr. Carrion stated that I should start with physical therapy and that the muscles around my knee caps needed to be strengthened. He wrote a referral to start physical therapy with Lcda.Teresa Astudillo. My experience with Dr. Carrion has been exceptional. He started with the least invasive and least expensive treatments. He has been honest with me and I feel absolutely safe with the decisions he has made so far in my recovery. I will certainly maintain him as my trauma specialist.
Lcda. Teresa Astudillo is the owner of Centro de Terapia Fisica y Rehabilitacion. She is absolutely awesome along with her assistant Daniella who has been diligently been working on my problems. They are genuinely dedicated and concerned for me to get stronger and better. Initially, I was seeing them 3 times a week, it has now been reduced to 2 times. Daniella has been working on me for about 2 and ½ months now, and I have never felt better. The treatments consist of laser treatments, electrotherapy stimulation, deep massages and heating pads, in addition to specific exercises to strengthen my back, neck and knees. Initially, I was told by my previous doctor that I could never run again, now, I have progressed to a brief trot. The tingling sensations and abdominal pain are gone, my lower back pain is gone, my neck pain has dissipated. I still have weeks of therapy to go, but so far, my progress is due to the excellent guidance and therapy I am receiving.
The doctor, whose care I was under when the surgery was performed on my knees in October 2020, had taken me to a clinic to have the operation done. To be honest, I really do not know who actually performed the surgery. Anyway, after a night in the clinic for recovery, I suffered a nervous breakdown and had to be admitted to Monte Sinai the following day. The care that I received at the clinic had been substandard. I was in so much pain and I had problems breathing. The toilet did not have a toilet seat, there was no safety handle to hold to that would normally be beside a toilet (especially after knee surgery), not mention the unsanitary conditions of the bathroom and the room that I was in, the list goes on. In addition, this same doctor wanted to schedule me for a colonoscopy with one of his associates to diagnose the abdominal pain I was experiencing. Even though I had explained that I had a colonoscopy the previous year, this doctor still insisted on me having the procedure-I did not have it done.
So, I would like to again thank Dra. Rosanna Polo Torres, Dr. Marco Carrion Monsalve, and Lcda. Teresa Astudillo for getting me back to health.
