Cultura Viva combines Spanish language learning with art, culture, and community-based experiences, creating immersive opportunities to practice language through meaningful creative exploration.

This month, we have a new class called Language of the Body!

This course explores the human body as a powerful tool for expression, communication, and identity. Across eight sessions, participants will examine how the body has been represented throughout different cultures and historical periods while discovering the many ways it has shaped art, ritual, performance, and theatrical traditions around the world.

Through observation, writing, movement, and creative experimentation, participants will develop new forms of personal expression while engaging with themes of identity, bodily perception, symbolism, and contemporary art.

Our guest expert is professional classical Indian dancer Alejandra Herrera. She will guide participants through the dances and theatrical traditions of India, introducing the symbolic language of the hands, eyes, and the nine emotions described in the Natyashastra, an ancient Indian treatise on the performing arts.

About Our Artists / Aura String QuartetJorge Fernández (violin): violinist from Guayaquil with an outstanding artistic career, he has received multiple awards in prestigious violin competitions. He was concertmaster of Guayaquil Municipal Philharmonic Orchestra. He currently works as a violin professor in the Musical Arts program at the University of Cuenca.Jhomayra Cevallos (violin): violinist from Cuenca with an extensive national and international career in classical music, tango, and folklore. She was concertmaster in the Kortrijk Symfonisch Orkest in Belgium and currently works as Principal Violin at the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra.Santiago Paccha (viola): violinist/violist from Cuenca, he served for several years as concertmaster of the University of Cuenca Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, he has participated in numerous national and international music festivals. He currently serves in the first violin section of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra.Moisés Pauta (cello): Ecuadorian cellist with a national and international career in traditional popular music, orchestral performance, chamber music, and solo repertoire. He performs regularly in chamber music concerts and is currently Principal Cellist of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra.
