I used to love bedtime; now my hip decides how I sleep

I used to fall asleep the moment my head touched the pillow. Now I lie down, roll onto my side, and there it is. That deep, heavy ache in my hip. Not sharp. Just a throbbing that gets worse the longer I stay there. So I turn over. Then I turn back. Then I lie there in the dark, wondering how many more times I’ll do this before morning.

I don’t tell my family much about it. They worry. And honestly, I’ve started to think maybe this is just what getting older feels like. But the worst part isn’t the pain. It’s waking up already tired, knowing the night is coming again. I never imagined that something so quiet could take so much from me. My sleep, my energy, my patience, even the joy of my morning coffee.

If this sounds like you, I want you to know something: this exact pattern, a deep ache that flares when you lie on that side, responds very well to the right treatment.

You’re not being dramatic. You’re not “just getting old.” And you don’t have to keep surviving your nights.

Try this tonight: Before you fall asleep, notice which position feels better and which one sets the ache off. Write both down, even just on a piece of paper by your bed. That small detail matters more than you think. Where it hurts, and how quickly, tells a professional exactly where to look. And it reminds you of something important: your nights aren’t a mystery to endure. They’re clues, and clues can be followed.

Rest isn’t a luxury at this stage of life. It’s part of healing.
