The Polylepis Hiking Route takes you deep into one of the most unique and fragile ecosystems of the Andes, El Cajas National Park. This trail winds through ancient Polylepis forests, also known as “paperbark trees,” whose twisted trunks and peeling reddish bark create a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
As you walk, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of high-altitude lakes, rugged
mountain peaks, and the rich biodiversity of El Cajas National Park. The Polylepis groves provide shelter to a variety of birds, including the giant hummingbird and the endemic violet-throated metaltail.
