98% or 2%, what percentage are you in?

There are just two kinds of Spanish learners:

1. The ones who learn grammar.
2. The ones who test themselves by perfecting the skills while listening and talking.

98% of students are those who follow the rule and get stuck on it, trying to find the origin, reasons and explanations about the use of “por” and “para”, “ser” and “estar” or whatever.

Being curious is not a bad thing by itself, I was so curious enough to find out what some words are pronounced differently in English despite both of them having the same combination of vowels, like decade (Greek) and debate (Latin), however, by learning these details I didn’t make any progress…

Be curious about the right thing to be curious…

Anyway back to my point:

Just 2% of students try to master this, cementing their listening memory.

After reading this I am sure you are aware which side you are spending a bunch of hours perfecting conjugations and its details, feeling frustrated by not being able to remember the verb conjugation at the right moment but two minutes later.

Or, maybe you are on the other side, being able to speak, listen and cement your listening memory by doing (… what I teach my students…).

98% have already paid a high price for mastering grammar, dozens of online and in person courses and the real price is not money, but the time wasted in something is not worth the value.

Same 98% will doubt about paying the price for mastering:

A decent pronunciation, decent listening, decent oral skills to be understood by natives (2% of students). The price is putting enough effort in the things to be curious about and apply your findings to your pronunciation.

98% vs 2%.

How many of you guys are the 98%?
How many of y’all are the 2%
How many of you’uns are willing to focus on the practical thing to do?

98% vs 2% (the reason why there are many students but just a few real speakers).

Keep in mind that the next time you are tempted to add more books and materials because maybe the less important thing to do in order to improve is having a dozen books or a perfect grammar handbook.

Tired of mucking around?

You are SO correct! When I moved here 12 hrs ago, my husband would never open his mouth to speak Span, because he wouldn’t have the grammar correct. He “knew” much more Spanish than I. However, in order to “survive” I just started in speaking whatever words I knew…often pantomiming.... Read more 0 0
