Travel from Guayaquil to Cuenca

Planning a trip to Ecuador flying into Guayaquil. What is the best way to get to Cuenca? Can you recommend a car/taxi service?

Considering a move to Ecuador

Hi! I am an American looking to relocate next summer or fall. Looking for recommendations for visa lawyer, moving company, realtor, and such. I have a small amount of stuff to ship from the States; trying to get it smaller. Probably stay in a furnished place until I find what I’m looking for, then move to an unfurnished. Looking at Vilcabamba or another warm area, but a reasonable distance from Cuenca. Don’t need beach. Have small pets. Would like a vibrant community with some amenities but prefer not to be in a high rise. Need a walkable area or good transit to stores, etc. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!

This year we are doing something different.

For five years we have been providing services to those affected by HIV in Ecuador. While the need for HIV care in Ecuador is a high priority, by sheer necessity our services have expanded to include much broader issues: homelessness, hunger, etc.

On November 30th, we are showcasing what we do and why. You will hear the director’s personal story as to why Hogar de Esperanza was founded, where it is today, and what the vision for the future is. There will be an exhibition of all the services we provide and you will get to meet many of the volunteers and staff of the foundation.

We invite you to join us and our special guests for an enjoyable and inspirational evening. Reservations are required as space is limited. All proceeds from the event will go to support our Christmas Program. This event will be held at Kolo’s and will include dinner, a glass of wine and entertainment by Deb Davis.

For reservations, email us to receive menu options and more information.

A little fairy godmother

I am excited to tell you about the last dream we fulfilled just yesterday. Our fairy godmother this time, was someone relatively young, 12-year old Paola. She was willing to fulfill the dream of a boy named Luis Miguel, who had not been able to study during the last two years of the pandemic; not because he did not want or did not like to study, but rather because he never had the means to continue his education.

Paola was surprised that this is the situation of many vulnerable children. So, she decided to look for a computer to donate. With full support of his parents and the help of Hearts of Gold, a special moment was organized. The day came for Luis Miguel to receive a big surprise.

Luis Miguel arrived with his mother at the Hearts of Gold offices, where his new computer, some snacks and an arrangement of balloons were waiting for him to celebrate that he could finally go back to school. They blindfolded him and then, when he opened his eyes and saw what it was, he couldn’t contain his emotions. His mother even cried because of the great gesture Paola had made towards her son. She said she could never have imagined that someone would have this kind of gift for them.

I personally really like this story because after the delivery I talked to Paola, and the way she sees things now has changed drastically! Now she is much more grateful for what she has and is committed to continue helping the most vulnerable.

About Face by Sharron Cobb

I have been administering facial treatments and procedures to Expats in Cuenca for 5 years. I created a line of chemical-free products for myself and my clients. At the encouragement of several clients, I am now offering my products to the public.

Dead skin is a culprit for wrinkled, lifeless, dull skin. Dead skin can make up as many as 18 to 23 layers of your skin. Gritty exfoliating products exfoliate unevenly and if you scrub too hard you could actually damage the skin. That’s why I have included 3 products that gently remove dead skin plus an inexpensive toner that I will recommend to you. Once the dead skin is gone, the skin can absorb the other ingredients to moisturize and build collagen and you’re left with glowing, more youthful skin. You will see a difference if you are consistent in following the protocol.

Problems with your landlord? Licensed attorney can help

Now that rents are going up after being depressed from the pandemic, some unscrupulous landlords are issuing illegal eviction notices to expats who do not know their legal rights under the law.

Even if you have a written lease, it may not be legally enforceable under Ecuadorian law if it does not contain certain elements or is not notarized. If your lease contains unenforceable provisions, you may not know this.

Consult with me, Paulina Urgiles, as I can review your situation and advise you on the best course of action. You likely have more options than you realize.

Cuyabeno Rainforest Reserve: The best of our Amazon Region

Cuyabeno Rainforest Adventure:
This program can be for 4 Days/ 3 Nights or 5 Days/ 4 Nights
The Cuyabeno National Park in Ecuador’s Amazon Region is one of the most spectacular places on earth. Over 602,000 hectares of primary rainforest with an incredible variety of Neotropical wildlife: river dolphins, caimans, anacondas, monkeys, spiders, and butterflies are just some of the animals you can find here. The bird life is spectacular as well, it includes the prehistoric-looking hoatzin, the umbrella bird, toucans, parrots, macaws, and the legendary harpy eagle.

The rainforest continues to be the home to communities of ancient indigenous tribes such as the Siona, the Secoya and the Cofan who have lived in the Amazon basin for thousands of years.

Recommendation for Diana Vera, end of life and medical facilitator

I had Diana help preparing and registering End of Life papers. The painful part is filling in the forms (not her problem). Saturday Morning Language Exchange

Dear Community,

We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish. The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers.

The sessions are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.

It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the later can practice English.

Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging into the city cultural activities.

Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.
