Giving new purpose to things you no longer need

What does Hogar de Esperanza do with your donations of clothing and household items? First and foremost, we give them away to those who are most in need of them with great care taken to ensure that nothing goes to waste. Any extra items are sold in Esperanza Thrift Shop, where all of the proceeds go back into supporting the foundation’s mission of helping those in greatest need.

Are you moving soon – perhaps across town or maybe even back home – and you have items that you can’t take with you? Do you wish you had someone to come carry away those items remaining after your moving sale, that you don’t know what to do with? Were you just spring-cleaning last week, and came across clothes in your closets that you no longer wanted? If you would like to do some incredible things with those items you no longer need or want, let us turn them into something valuable to help those in need.

We accept anything that you wish to donate, and put it to immediate use. You can come by Esperanza Thrift Shop, which is located at 8-18 Juan Montalvo y Mariscal Sucre, to drop off items Monday through Friday from 10 AM – 5 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM – 2 PM. We also do pick-ups of donations, so feel free to contact us to arrange a time. Thank you so much for your support of Hogar de Esperanza – we could not do any of this without you. https://hogaresperanza.org/en/donations/

Bloomberg article about Ecuador’s Sunday elections and bond markets

Bloomberg had a good analysis of the situation here in Ecuador. As of Sunday night it looks like a three-way runoff between Lasso, Araus and Yaku Perez (Cuencano).

Why Ecuador’s Sunday Vote Matters for the Bond Market: QuickTake
By Stephan Kueffner and Sydney Maki | Bloomberg
Feb. 7, 2021 at 5:17 p.m. CST

A record 16 candidates are on the ballot in the first round of Ecuador’s presidential election on Feb. 7. But coming just months after the nation’s 11th default or debt rescheduling since its founding in 1830, the vote comes down to a binary choice: whether to accept potentially harsh economic reforms, softened by loans from multilateral banks like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, with the goal of integration with nearby countries and freer trade with the US; or to return to a socialist Venezuela-style model of heavy government involvement in the economy. Those stakes mean the election will be watched beyond Ecuador’s borders, particularly in the bond market.

1. Who are the main candidates?

Guillermo Lasso, 65, is a career banker from the coastal hub Guayaquil and the favored candidate of conservatives. Andres Arauz, who turns 36 the day before the vote, is a left-wing economist.

He’s the protege of former socialist President Rafael Correa, who is in exile in Belgium, having been convicted in absentia for graft. Yaku Perez, a 51-year-old lawyer and anti-mining activist for the indigenous Pachakutik party, consistently places third in polls, behind Lasso and Arauz. If no candidate wins an absolute majority or obtains a minimum 40% with a 10-point margin over the runner-up, a runoff is scheduled for April 11.

2. What’s the issue for markets?

Ecuador is notorious in the bond market as a serial defaulter, having restructured $17.4 billion in debt just last year — Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar — and owing $45.4 billion in total foreign debt. Investors will be on the alert for signs that the next government will honor the terms of that agreement.

The new administration will also be judged on how it maintains austerity measures required under a deal inked in September with the International Monetary Fund. Austerity is less likely should Arauz be elected. That could stoke a selloff in the new bonds and further threaten the nation’s debt sustainability. A victory by Lasso, by contrast, could bring the nation back to international debt markets by 2022, in the view of one strategist.

3. Has the IMF deal stabilized the economy?

The IMF front-loaded $4 billion in the $6.5 billion rescue package in the second half of 2020, representing approximately 4% of the country’s annual GDP. This crucial influx of money has allowed the administration of President Lenin Moreno, who opted not to seek a second term, to largely stay current with civil servants and pay off some debts to government contractors, in turn allowing them to pay salaries and debts. Ecuador’s economy likely shrank a record 8.9% in 2020, according to the central bank.

4. What do the candidates promise?

Lasso’s main pledge is to strengthen investor confidence through orthodox economic reforms, reducing red tape and increasing private-sector hiring, using neighboring Colombia and Peru as models. He also promised to raise the minimum wage to $500 and to reform public health care hit hard by Covid-19, and picked a doctor as his running mate. Arauz promises to kickstart growth by distributing $1,000 each to 1 million needy families — using $1 billion of central bank reserves — in his first week as president. He also wants judges to review the case against Correa and allow him to return from exile. Perez says he would pursue negotiations with creditors in hopes of easing the nation’s debt payments, perhaps by extending maturities.

5. What’s the backdrop to all this?

From his exile in Belgium, Correa played a key role in picking Arauz, a relative political unknown, to carry on his legacy. Correa featured prominently in ads and on posters until they were banned by the National Electoral Council on the grounds that his conviction had stripped him of the right to campaign.

During Correa’s presidency, from 2007 to 2017, Ecuador’s relations with the U.S. soured as he aligned the country with Cuba, Venezuela and Iran. China became a crucial lender, providing billions for infrastructure built by Chinese companies. Since 2017, under Moreno, Ecuador restored ties to the U.S., and in the last days of Donald Trump’s presidency, the U.S. International Development Finance Corp. struck a deal to help Ecuador repay billions of dollars owed to China.

Recommendation for Klever Services, transportation

We needed to pick up an item at Mt. Sinai pharmacy and called Patrick (Patricio or Klever) to help. He was in Challubamba and had already committed to a project there, but told me he could come at a specific time to pick us up and take us round trip to the pharmacy. When that time had passed, we received a phone call. Patrick was still unloading machinery from his double cab pickup and would be delayed. He asked if it would be ok to come later – we said “yes.” A little while later, we got another call – he was 5-10 minutes away in heavy traffic (Friday late afternoon can be heavy) – please wait. He came and took us to the new Mt. Sinai pharmacy. There was no parking anywhere on the nearby streets, so he stayed in his truck somewhere until we called to tell him we were ready. He came immediately and returned us to our home. On Sunday, election day, he came in to take us to vote and waited nearby to bring us home again. He saw us leave the building and came quickly to our side, asking if we wanted him to bring the truck around so we didn’t have to walk. We were fine.

He provides great service, speaks excellent English, and is available for many trips by appointment. Even trips to and from Guayaquil or elsewhere in the country. He is responsible and takes care that his passengers are comfortable. Since he has a pickup truck, he can also carry loads for you. He has worked moving fine furniture and appliances, doing gardening, clean up, carpentry, and as a facilitator. We have known him since we first visited Cuenca in 2010.

Recommendation for Rafael – baker, bakery

I’ve been ordering for a while now from Rafael. He has great sourdough, classic round or rectangular loaves. He has a professional slicer and the sourdough comes in mild/regular or sharp (which I really like!) I recently tried his peasant or “Country” bread and it brought back memories and was fantastic.

He also made for me pineapple rolls with anise that I really love. Try one. You won’t be able to stop eating them, they are so unique.

He delivers, so, text him with your address and order. You won’t be disappointed.

Move for Health (post #5) from DEFY

Last week we examined the wonderful benefits our brain receives from exercise. This week we’ll see what the Mayo Clinic and the American Heart Association have to say about the benefits of exercise.

According to the Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/fitness/in-depth/exercise/art-20048389?pg=2) exercise can improve our lives in the following ways:

Exercise controls weight.

Exercise boosts HDL cholesterol and decreases LDL cholesterol, so decreases our risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Exercise boosts HDL cholesterol and decreases LDL cholesterol, so decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Exercise can help us prevent or manage stroke, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, type II diabetes, depression, anxiety, many types of cancer, arthritis and falls.

Exercise improves mood by stimulating various brain chemicals that may help us feel happier, more relaxed and less anxious.

Exercise boosts energy. It can improve our muscle strength and boost our endurance.

Exercise promotes better sleep. It can help us fall asleep faster and experience deeper sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, to avoid sleep problems.

Exercise can be fun and social.

Exercise can improve our sex life.

And the American Heart Association adds these benefits:

Physical activity improves the quality of life.

Moderate exercise helps in the battle to quit smoking.

It provides a way to share an activity with family and friends.

It helps delay or prevent chronic illnesses and diseases associated with aging and maintains the quality of life and independence longer for seniors.

These are just some of the benefits of moving our bodies (with exercise) regularly.

*Next week we’ll look at how exercise helps prevent some more serious health problems. *

Facts about Thailand:

Males were all Buddhist monks for a while. There was a time when all young men in Thailand (including royalty) were required to become Buddhist monks–even if only for a short period of time–before they turned 20. This practice is not observed as it used to be these days, however.

Our specials of the week are:

Shrimp Fried Rice with Basil. $8.50
