Does anybody have any recommendations for companies monitoring alarm systems? Have heard that it is very hit and miss here and was wondering if anyone had any good experiences with a company here. Thanks in advance.

Rough Knuckle Sconery was able to donate $139 to the Cuenca Soup Kitchen for the month of September 2019, bringing our total contribution to $881 which translates to approximately 819 meals. We only accomplished this during the month of September with the help of our retail partners, Slow Brew Coffee Cafe, Telicioso Tea Shop, the soon to be renamed Vegetable Bar and most importantly you, the Expat community and readers of GringPost.
For the less fortunate members of our community who were served a hot meal during the month of September your choice to spend your money at our retail partner’s establishments has made the difference between being served a hot meal and going hungry. It is our sincere hope that you will continue to patronize these unique and civic minded businesses. It is through them that we are able to continue to contribute 100% of our profit after expenses to the critical humanitarian work of the Cuenca Soup Kitchen.
We often meet volunteers from the Soup Kitchen during our daily outings and when we introduce ourselves they humbly thank us for our donations. We are always dumbfounded and overwhelmed by their generosity of spirit because all of Cuenca should be thanking them for their compassion, their hard work and for their humanity. They are the ones that are doing the heavy lifting.
In an interview we did some time ago we were asked what beyond our monthly contribution Rough Knuckle Sconery was hoping to achieve. We quickly said we hoped to feed 1000 people! Realizing we were almost there, we gave it some thought said we really hoped other businesses and Gringo vendors might be inspired to do the same, to donate even a portion of their proceeds to our community and to display that fact at their businesses. Because if we have a choice, we will always choose to spend our money at businesses that give back.
One scone at a time.
The team at Rough Knuckle Sconery
We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish in an awesome location by the Puente Roto. The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers.
The sessions are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.
It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the later can practice English.
Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging into the city cultural activities.
Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.
October 5th, from 11:30 AM to 1 PM, Voluntary Contribution from $2, Nuna Coffee & Grill (Paseo 3 de Noviembre s/n Escalinata del Puente Roto), Cuenca.

Lassie, a small/med size Golden Labrador mix, is a very sweet and gentle girl about 3-years old. She’s been groomed, spayed and has received all annual vaccinations.
When her owners moved away, they tied her inside the house. The next-door neighbor heard her cries for help and broke into the house to save little Lassie.
Lassie is a sweet adorable and manageable doggie with excellent manners.
Would you consider giving her a chance in a real loving home? She will love you and I know you will love her.

My husband saw a German Shepherd in el Vergel that was being confined to the front of a house. His body is covered with flies and inside his ears too. We suspect maggots are in his ear as well. We can get help for this doggie, but we can’t find him.
Proximity of Work Center He started here and got lost trying to find SuperMaxi El Vergel.
Work Center: Miguel Cordera Davil y Paucarbama and El Vergel SuperMaxi and Hansel and Gretel. Doggie could be in these boundaries. He got lost and can’t remember where the poor doggie is. We spent nearly 2 hours searching today.
Please contact me immediately if you see or know of this doggie. Gross neglect is against the law. Here are some contacts of people I know who are bilingual and can file the report with:

“I have to tell you, after taking numerous classes before, this blows the doors off of all of the others.”
–Peter, current student
“I have been in Cuenca 10-months now and have tried two different Spanish schools and dreaded each of them. Hannah’s class is different with smiles and “high fives”, it is only an hour long and just two days a week – but the prefect dose for me. I approach learning Spanish as though I am moving a mountain. Difficult but possible – one stone at a time. It is fun moving those stones with Hannah.”
—Chip, current student
Frustrated with previous Spanish learning experiences? Discouraged by a heavy grammar focus or the teacher’s correction of your every mistake? Stymied by trying to make conversation with your one-on-one teacher for an hour? Bored of stories that don’t relate to what you want to learn?
Come try my Spanish class! My class focuses on speaking. My classes are kinesthetic, interactive, student-directed (we learn what you want to learn) and fun! My teaching methodology imitates how we all learned our first language–with lots of repetition, positive feedback, and language input. I have 10 years of experience teaching Spanish.
Class is for intermediate speakers—we speak in Spanish for the full hour. Cost is $10/class. Unlike most Spanish classes, I don’t charge a monthly rate–you only pay for the classes you attend. However, if you don’t plan to come regularly, the class will probably move too quickly for you, and you will feel like you are behind.
Come check it out! You’ll be surprised by how much you learn and retain.

“I’ve worked with Irisnaya a few times now. She is very reliable, trustworthy, and skilled at cooking great meals. I’ve asked her to help me with meal prepping for the week by cooking in bulk, so I can do other things with my time besides be in the kitchen. Iris is also excellent at cleaning. She is quite thorough, and great with dust too. I highly recommend Irisnaya, as she is also a joy to be around, fun, and has a great loving spirit. Iris was originally recommended by a local doctor, and then by a gringa friend who worked with her for half a year, before passing away. Iris helped her when she was immobile from an operation, so she is quite flexible with her skills.” ~ Mimi Phoebe

Howdy – Dave here. I wanted to thank everyone that has come out and had a meal or beverage or snack or some conversation at The new Vegetable Bar which will be named something different here at the end of the week. We will also have a winner of the contest then, also. If you haven’t voted for the new name you can do so at http://www.renametvb.com. Things are getting exciting – we are also looking at a new location (across the street) tomorrow also. If that doesn’t work out, we have three other places that could be home to the newly named restaurant. And if those don’t work out, we’ll stay where we are for the time being. We do not want to move away from the Ordonez Lasso area.
September was our first full month in business. We learned a lot and made more than our fair share of mistakes. Despite this, we have some great regular customers which have become members of our family. Some of them were perfectly normal before, but are dysfunctional (as a family should be) now. All kidding aside, I wake up every day and thank my “lucky stars” for the friends I have made thus far…and they like the food, too which is a bonus.
Today’s Special (Thursday) is going to be shrimp tacos. If you’ve had our shrimp tacos you know they are out of this world. 2 shrimp tacos for $4.50 and 3 for $5.95. If you want more, each taco after 3 can be purchased for and additional $1.50. The tacos come with MegaChips. We have a limited supply, so come early and get them while the getting is good.
If you’ve been to The new Vegetable Bar, you may have tried our Cheese Cake. I have eaten a lot of Cheese Cake in my life and I can honestly say, we have the BEST Cheese Cake on the planet. Even you folks that might be from New York, will say, “WOW, that is better than New York Cheese Cake!” This is why we are calling it Better than New York Cheese Cake. You can have some caramel sauce, white chocolate sauce or dark chocolate sauce drizzled on it or eat it plain. However you have it, it is Amazing. To celebrate the upcoming new name, we are offering a free cappuccino with every piece of Cheese Cake ordered. No need to thank us for this trip to food Nirvana. You’ll be back for more of that, we are certain. We have a guy that drives all the way from Paute for a slice.
Our hours have changed. We are open Monday – Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM and Sunday 9 AM to 1 PM for all you can eat brunch. Stay tuned because we will be opening for Dinner soon.
Our location is convenient at Ordonez Lasso y Los Cedros 5-58 in the Los Cedros Edificio next to Mundo Digital and across the street from Produbanco. Hope to see you soon.
