The Polylepis Hiking Route takes you deep into one of the most unique and fragile ecosystems of the Andes. This trail winds through ancient Polylepis forests, also known as “paperbark trees,” whose twisted trunks and peeling reddish bark create a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere. As you walk, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of high-altitude lakes, rugged mountain peaks, and the rich biodiversity of El Cajas National Park.
The Polylepis groves provide shelter to a variety of birds, including the giant hummingbird and the endemic violet-throated metaltail.
The route is moderately challenging due to the altitude, so take your time, stay hydrated, and let the crisp Andean air refresh you. Along the way, you’ll not only witness incredible landscapes but also experience the quiet beauty of one of the world’s rarest forest types.
