Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope) celebrating 5 years of changing lives

May 1st marked 5 years since we first opened our doors. Due to the current, enhanced COVID-19 restrictions, we are holding off on our celebrations for now – so stay tuned.

In reflecting on how far we have come during this short time, our growth has been phenomenal. We started out on Tarqui in a small building with just 6 rooms. Our kitchen was so tiny that only one person could enter at a time. The office space was nestled in the overhangs of the open patio, protected with a plastic tarp for when it rained. But we made do with what we had, and utilized the space efficiently to begin putting our mission in action. That first year, we provided 659 meals and 238 nights of accommodation to those living with HIV or those at risk due to poverty.

Since those humble beginnings, we were able to move to our current location which has 38 rooms, 21 bathrooms, a spacious commercial kitchen, medical offices, a gymnasium, a training center, and much more. And in 2020, we served 56,575 meals to those in need and our beds were slept in 12,775 times. We provided thousands more with medications, medical support, transportation assistance, clothing, and much more.

Over the years, we have garnered the respect of many public systems who now depend on us for the special niche that we fill, including the National Police, Municipalities and Hospitals. We have agreements in place with: University of Cuenca, Catholic University, Technical Institute of Azuay, La Favorita Corporation (which includes Supermaxi and Gran Aki), the Municipality of Cuenca, and other government agencies. With these partners by our side, we are able to receive diverse types of support which enables us to provide those who we help with a professional array of services that are both unique and holistic.

All of us at Fundacion Hogar de Esperanza share our deepest appreciation for our donors and supporters. Together, over the past 5 years, we have helped so, so many families, children, elderly, critically ill, the hungry, the homeless and those recovering from abuse, and the list goes on. With your support, we have changed countless lives, and saved many others.

Thank you for being a part of this journey. Through the good times and the challenging ones. And the work continues, as those who depend on us need our help now more than ever.
