$2 bills in Ecuador; some interesting stories

https://edition.cnn.com/2022/09/17/business/2-dollar-bill-history/index.html

Here in Ecuador, the $2 bills are considered a “good luck amulet”, but, someone has to give you one, as a gift. The “magic” doesn’t work if you receive it as a payment.

Since May 2019, the $2 bills are officially in circulation in Ecuador, when the Ecuadorian government brought some millions of dollars, in order to help the economy of small payments, but, the bills disappear. Actually, in Loja, I never saw one in circulation, only twice in Quito and one in Cuenca.

Being busy is a good thing!

Phew! It’s been a busy couple of weeks at the Cuenca Soup Kitchen.

1. We were able to purchase, organize, and distribute school supply kits for all of the over 200 students in our program. Thank you!

2. We had a great visit with US Consul General, Brian Quigley and Alex Rodriguez, the Minister of Tourism of Guayas Province. In addition to discussing expat issues in Cuenca, the Consul General also contributed towards the school supply kit. Thank you!

3. Extra dry goods were distributed to those on the streets who cannot come to us.

4. St. Christopher’s Episcopal Mission donated a significant amount of hygiene goods which we were able to pass through to foundations we lend food support to. Thank you!

5. We distributed food kits to approximately 1,000 people. This is made possible by monthly donors for as little as $25 per month per family. Thank you!

6. And finally, we celebrated birthdays by sending home cakes and gifts so that families can continue their special traditions. Thank you!

To become a monthly donor please visit cuencasoupkitchen.org, click the donate button, and select the monthly option.

English Club: conversation

Dear community,

I’m a local English teacher interested in creating a group between my university students and some willing expats or native speakers of English. The aim is to give them the opportunity to exchange information about interesting experiences from other cultures. Cuenca is a city that has a wide community of foreigners who are also willing to be in touch with locals. Some Spanish could be used too if agreed.

Once the group is confirmed, the only thing expected from foreigners is to agree on a day we can meet one or twice a month to have a nice conversation about topics selected.

Let me know if you are interested in providing this voluntary service as you make new friends including teachers and students who will take advantage of everything you can share in different city sites.

Turi: Not quite done yet. (photos)

I walked up the road last Friday and grabbed a few snapshots while I was there. Lots of people were there enjoying the weather as well as the views, almost like the old days.

Not much to say about the work, except that things are beginning to open up a bit, specifically the east-side road, some of the area in front of the church, and a few drop-off/pick-up parking spots along the side of the church, though the stairs are still closed off, and that general area is where most of the current construction is. The road on the west side was still blocked.

The word is that the project will be done by the end of this month, but let’s just say that as always, maybe we can appreciate what progress has already been made, be patient, and hope for the best.

A Discussion of Humor by Leroy Kent

Today, jokes have almost entirely disappeared from public contexts, and have become a discreet affair, reserved for trusted friends. This is a huge loss to society as a whole.

The dispute about the propriety of certain jokes is regularly rehashed. One side says that humor insidiously molds our attitudes and that we must vigilantly censor jokes that might offend in order to reduce prejudice and protect the powerless.

The other side wonders what has happened to our collective sense of humor. Possibly the shift to giving everyone participation trophies has made people too fragile to hear ideas that they may not agree with.

A number of people have taken exception with my attempts at humor. Those people espouse personal attacks and state with certainty their own moral and ethical superiority. But their rantings all suffer from one fatal flaw. Those persons have confused the target of the joke with the subject of the joke.

Mexico revives a 3,000-year-old ball game [short video]

From BBC Reel…
In Mexico, a group of athletes are on a mission to revive an ancient sporting tradition – a tribute to the game once enjoyed by their ancestors.

Thought to be approximately 3,000 years old, the Mesoamerican ballgame ‘Juego de Pelota’ could be one of the oldest team sports in the world. It was once played by the Aztecs, Maya and Incas and carries ancient cultural and religious significance.

It was only when Spanish conquistadors banned the game in the 16th Century did the game fade into legend.

Top 3 areas to live in Cuenca preferred by expats

Cuenca has many attractive areas to live in, due to its good quality of life. Some examples of that are the drinking water service, the new tram (it’s the largest public transport system in Cuenca and the first modern tram in Ecuador), the bicycle paths and many more advantages which make it the number one destination to live in the entire country.

In recent years it has become a multicultural city, welcoming several foreigners who have decided to settle in the country. In September 2009, International Living magazine named it “the world’s top retirement destination,” encouraging dozens of foreigners (mainly American retirees) to move to Cuenca.

Today we will talk about these 3 areas

1. Ordóñez Lasso Avenue

The main entry and exit route to the western part of the city.

For several years, on this avenue, specifically in the area of the Oro Verde Hotel, a pretty remarkable growth of the urban sector has been seen, mainly in modern buildings. This growth came along with the presence of expats; this area has become one of the favorite places chosen by expats to live in.
An average of 30% of expats lives in this area.

This area has many bilingual places like restaurants, bakeries, bars with live music where several people from the expat community meet, this will help you make friends and blend in to Cuenca easier. One of the biggest supermarkets is also located near this avenue.

2. Puertas del Sol (Gates of the Sun)

This is another of the area with a high percentage of expats. It has fabulous views, green areas to walk and also plenty of space to walk your dog. Adding to this, the presence of the majestic Tomebamba River. You don’t always have the privilege to live near a river that crosses the whole city.
Many Expats decide to live in that area because there are many apartments inside condominiums, also because of security issues and easy access to different places of the city.

3. Challuabamba

This area is warm – not so cold like Cuenca – and is further from the center of city. There you can enjoy excellent walks and mountain biking very close to the area. The land and houses in that area are usually very large, which means it’s more likely to have large green spaces. There is a high growth in this area with several supermarkets, schools, pharmacies, parks and recreational areas.

One T spoon is enough to make your kitchen blush

“fenugreek” (methi in Hindi , kasoori methi for leaf)
Its seeds, which smell and taste like maple syrup, have been used in cooking and as medicine. Fenugreek is used as an ingredient in spice blends and a flavoring agent in foods, beverages
In North Africa, Asia, and southern Europe, fenugreek was traditionally used for diabetes and to increase milk supply in women who were breastfeeding.
Today, fenugreek is promoted as a dietary supplement for diabetes, menstrual cramps, and other conditions and to stimulate milk production during breastfeeding.

Taste the unique blend of spices

Turmeric is a common spice that comes from the root of curcuma longa. It contains a chemical called curcumin, which might reduce swelling and osteo arthritis

Turmeric has a warm, bitter taste and is frequently used to flavor or color curry powders, mustards, butters, and cheeses. Because curcumin and other chemicals in turmeric might decrease swelling, it is often used to treat conditions that involve pain and inflammation.

Jet Blue: NO, you do not need to be fully vaxxed to return to EC

While traveling in the US on business, I received an email from Jet Blue saying you must be fully vaxxed to return to EC with the last vax 14 days prior to return.

This is a lie! I went to the Denver airport and spoke with United airlines, and they confirmed it’s either vaxxed or a negative RT-PCR test. I then went to the Jet Blue counter, and she also confirmed it’s either vaxxed or a negative RE-PCR test. I showed her the email I received, and she said it’s incorrect and that she would advise her supervisor.

JetBlue’s incompetency damn near caused me a heart attack. For sure, they ruined my day. I am boarding the flight today in FLL to return to EC and will again speak with them.

Re: Any experiences with Vibes Travel Store

Has anyone booked a trip with Vibes Travel Store? A friend and I did. We sent our deposit by cash transfer, they had promised to send us our flights and all our details immediately upon receipt. That was March 29th.

We requested our flight info over and over. They then ghosted us, through WhatsApp they kept asking us to send more and more money with no proof of any actual trip. We told them we would pay the balance immediately upon proof of our flights and our booking. They refused to answer at all.

I had an Ecuadorian friend contact them in fluent Spanish. They promised her they would send everything immediately over and over, then ghosted her too. So she called from different phones.

They would promise again each time to send a proper invoice with details and get right back to her.

They never returned a call. One after another they ghosted each phone she reached out from.

Then they sent an invoice for thousands more dollars, still without flights or details.

I texted them I would pay the balance as soon as I was given actual airline reservations, which had been promised over a month before. I wanted to call and verify with an airline as I had lost faith in them. Or I would like a refund of my deposit as they had no proof of any trip. At that point they ghosted and blocked me.

I am disappointed. I was really looking forward to the trip offered to Turkey, Greece and Egypt. I was fully prepared to pay what they had asked. But not with being scammed. No travel agency has ever treated me like that. I am not gullible.

Does anyone else have any experience with booking with them, good or bad?

Is it just us? We realize flight prices have gone crazy. If they had been honest and just told us they could no longer buy tickets that fit the budget we would have understood.

They could have refunded with integrity, or told us the situation. But, instead, they ignored us and when my friend reached out just kept saying it was done and they would get right back with her or us. They never did. We were supposed to leave early June. We are out our $600 deposit. If they had had their way, we would be out $6000 more.

I didn’t want anyone else to go through this. By the same token I would love to know if anyone has had a good trip with them.

I know the price hikes and fuel increases may have made us all a casualty. Perhaps they simply couldn’t follow through because of the flights not locked in at the price they based the trip on. But they should have communicated with us.

Thoughts?

Wes the Mentalist…apology

Thanks to all the contributors to the Cuenca Soup Kitchen at Wednesday night’s event at KOLO.

We had a few program hiccups…but thanks to your patience and goodwill there were some “mind-blowing” results according to a few well-wishers when the program concluded. And, as I think we all feel, it’s about the charity and seeing our fellow contributors. I’m glad to provide a little window dressing, even if there were a few “dropped stitches” in the fabric.

Sleight of mind not sleight of hand.

And, in case you’re wondering, the use of the blindfold to limit my sense of sight in order to enhance my sixth sense will not be repeated. Never again “out of sight not out of mind.”

Paws with Hope

Paws with Hope has rescued over 60 street dogs in the past 5 years, as well as a good number of cats. We have not been able to take in more dogs because we still have a few who first need to find their forever families. We try our best to give these dogs and cats the best life possible while living here, and if we took in more, we would not be able to provide, as it is hard enough already. It would not be fair to our dogs or the new dogs coming in. Thanks to people who have supported our rescue mission, every animal currently here is sterilized.

We are always in need of dog food, cat food, and cat litter. At this moment in time we desperately need these 3 things, as well as new harnesses for the dogs. We have been using the same ones for a while now, and they are broken and on their least leg!
If you can donate any of these items please reach out to me. You can also donate through paypal: Pawswithhopecuenca@yahoo.com

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Getting a new passport? Transfer your visa

Attention Expats, I was at Azogues yesterday and I gathered this information. I hope it is useful. My immigration attorney asked for it since Azogues changes the requirements often.

I posted a new change about getting a cedula in another posting. The office has changed requirements for my cedula three times since December, 2021. Yesterday I was successful.

When we need to replace an expired or lost passport, we must transfer the previous attached visa.
Before the visa we received was applied like a sticker inside the passport.

Now they are issued as a paper visa that we carry with the passports.

Azogues changes process for expat cedulas

I am writing as an expat who has a permanent visa. It was a process not listed on the website.

Now when you go the Azogues-province Azuay- to get that new visa, you can pay the same day as they accept the documents and return in the afternoon for the visa and the new order de cedulacion; one day service.

I was caught unprepared and had to return another day to get my cedula paperwork. This is not preferred, so do it as a same day service. The guard told me they changed this over a year ago but not listed in the website.

Asset report for external funds due in May

According to our constitution, all residents of Ecuador, temporary and permanent regardless of their country of origin, have the same rights and obligations as Ecuadorians. This applies to tax benefits as well as tax filing. In May of each year the Asset Annex is due- this is not new- and it has nothing to do with the tax information agreement signed between Ecuador and the US back in 2021.

However, having this agreement means that Ecuador can legally request financial and tax information from the US if it feels the need to do so.

Who should file? All Ecuadorian residents who had assets in Ecuador and abroad from Jan 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021, including property inside and outside of Ecuador, all investments and bank accounts inside and outside of Ecuador of $200,000 or more; $400,000 for married couples.

Due date – This must be filed in May, the day depends on your ninth cedula digit. This filing does not mean you have to pay taxes on the amounts you are reporting. But, if you do not file the Asset Annex for 2021, you can be fined by the SRI for not reporting.

For questions, don’t hesitate to contact me.

Cherie Rose just fought the battle of her life in trench warfare, immersed in her campaign against severe osteoporosis.

She had a wonderful life here in Cuenca! Over time, she grew to love and respect Ecuadorian people, as they represented “tranquilo,” a concept, idea that Cherie cherished. She had become enamored of her dear Cuencana friend, assistant, Susana who taught her many cultural tricks of the trade here. In addition, Cherie appreciated the multiple opportunities she had to mingle with so many adventurous expats, which consistently stimulated her own highly free-swinging spirit.

National Garbage Collectors Day

Often I stand and look down from my high floor, large window at the garbage men quickly collecting heavy cans from the large condo next door. It takes them only a minute to pick it up and be gone to the next stop. As I also watch them run behind their trucks on our busy street, I have wished I could express my great appreciation and drop them off a token of gratitude and respect. As someone else noticed, there are no fat garbage collectors. We couldn’t live well without them.

I do not know of a National Garbage Collectors Day but there should be one.

New documentary about Cuenca

I would like to thank all of the locals and expats who took part in and supported my recent documentary. It was a very fun two months putting this together, getting to know the city, and making friends along the way.

“Coworking in Cuenca” (2022).

Without your support to participate and to share the word, it would not have been possible. The documentary has been well received well. I am so happy with the response.

Much love,
Capture Joseph

Professional behavior in Ecuador?

I get confused about culture or crazy here. Our dentist found a posting error around 5:30 Monday. She called and my spouse was in the shower so I left it for her to leave a message. After three calls she leaves a text. The text instructions are for us to arrive the next day to pay this. Then she started calling repeatedly. She would hang up and call immediately. It reminded me of those stalker movies. I turned off the phone about an hour later. The next morning about 9 AM the receptionist shows up at our door. I wouldn’t talk to her. I sent an email requesting the dentist to stop calling or coming to our place and only use email. Also, because I was so annoyed by this point, I requested a three-day break to calm down and be able to talk rationally. She is still sending emails. It was the first time in my life I had to block someone’s emails. Can anyone decipher this to what is cultural and what is crazy?

RIP Jerry Joe Holland

August 17, 1951 – March 15, 2022

My beloved husband and our robustly-talented “Cuenca Blues Man”, Jerry Joe Holland, died on March 15, 2022. Jerry was diagnosed last Christmas week with stage 4 pancreatic cancer that had spread to his liver. He was given only 2 months to live. He immediately started receiving palliative care to keep him as comfortable as possible.

Jerry loved performing music more than anything else. He also had a deep and abiding respect and connection with animals and all living things, for that matter. In the past 4.5 years, Jerry grew to love and appreciate the people and places of Cuenca and Ecuador. He was very happy here and did not ever regret leaving the United States. Jerry was a soft-spoken, gentle soul, who was so easy to approach as his friendliness radiated from his heart.

Jerry Joe is survived by his loving wife, Jo Austin, of Cuenca, and his sister, Paula Holland, of California. He is also survived by his beloved rescue doggies, Ande and Marvin, from Cuenca, along with his precious kitty, Giselle, from Seattle. Jerry’s additional survivors include many beloved friends from Seattle and California.

If you’re so inclined to make a donation in honor of Jerry Joe’s memory, please consider Cuenca’s animal welfare organizations.
