Hogar Esperanza, Tuesday 10 AM to noon

I’m learning new things about Hogar Esperanza in Cuenca. I like that the name means House of Hope. On Tuesdays I will continue to host a table of kids in drawing and painting. Usually, their parents or grandparents are here. They drop their kids at the art table. I enjoy showing them how to print their name if they are writing their letters backwards. More than that we identify colors in Spanish and English and learn how to use them for the kid’s art experience. Yesterday we drew rainbows.

Tuesdays from 10 AM to noon., free, Hogar esperanza. Juan Montalvo 8-18 and Mariscal Sucre,, Cuenca.

Friend needs work – full time, part time, daily, morning or afternoon

Teachers at area schools were let go as of June 30. My friend is one of those and due to on-going Covid situations and budgets, she has not been able to return to work.

She has two school-aged children and lost her husband due to illness earlier this year, so there was only one income. Sadly, she has been struggling even harder to make ends meet, pay the rent and food and clothing for the children.

She is available morning, afternoon, or even all day, by appointment to assist you with all your needs. She can tutor children or adults on-line or in your home (Spanish only), clean, cook, prepare food, garden, run errands for you – even teach you Spanish if you wish.

Please contact me if you have any jobs she could do for you. And thanks to those who have extended a helping hand for her and for others. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

10 day meditation retreat – perception of reality

In our present world, especially in the times of pandemic, we often feel trapped, powerless, incapable of really influencing the external factors, which seem to be determining the course of our lives and in the same time overwhelmed by the amount of existing possibilities and digital impulses. This is even more the case if our current personal or professional situation is not ideal. And because we are afraid to lose control even more, we grasp and try to hold on to concepts which feel familiar and safe to us, although deep inside we feel that life has more to offer and that the time for a change has come.

Do you ever feel the same? If so, this retreat is exactly the right one for you. Over the course of 10 days in the jungle of Ecuador we will explore our understanding of reality, concentrating primarily on how we perceive it & how we can co-create it according to our interests. A mix of diverse exercises, group discussions as well as experiences of altered states of consciousness is designed to help us question our personal realities, deliver new impulses & inspirations and empower us towards a conscious reality creation.

Wednesday films at La Guarida, new matinée

For over 4 years now, we have been projecting films week after week. We have never added a matinée until now. Little by little we have become the only place to watch cult, oldies, independent, international films. In essence, we have the best film schedule anywhere in Ecuador. On top of that, you can eat one of the best meals in Cuenca and enjoy of our own art gallery.

1:30 PM Showing: We start our matinée series with a John Waters’ film. We will project “Pink Flamingos.’ A film that truly disturbs our senses. A confrontational work in its grotesqueness, uniqueness and bizarre nature. Divine, a Baltimore native, steals the show and has become one of most recognizable pop icons. A film not suitable for everyone. Come enjoy a brand-new brunch menu.

6:45 PM. La Llorona.
With the words “If you cry, I’ll kill you” ringing in their ears, Alma and her sons are murdered in Guatemala’s armed conflict. Thirty years later, a criminal case is brought against Enrique Monteverde, a retired general who oversaw the genocide. But he’s acquitted through a mistrial and the spirit of La Llorona is unleashed to wander the world like a lost soul amongst the living. At night, Enrique starts to hear her wailing. His wife and daughter believe he’s having bouts of Alzheimer’s-related dementia. Little could they suspect that their new housekeeper, Alma, is there to seek out vengeance due the unjust trial.

Please remember to make reservations for these films. Two masterpieces on their own right. Two incredible and very different films. Don’t miss out. Call 099 806 8071.

October 6th, from 1:30 PM to 9:30 PM, Free, Mariscal Lamar and Luis Pauta, Cuenca.

Saturday morning language exchanges are back!

We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish. After a year and a half of forced break, we come back with refreshed energy and a new-brand awesome location in El Centro. The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers.

The sessions are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.

It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the later can practice English.

Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging into the city cultural activities.

Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.

Activities and exhibition with artist, Moya Foley, at idiomART

Moya Foley was born and raised in Canada and moved to the northern coast of Ecuador in the late 1970s to find her own artistic expression. Since that time, she has been creating and teaching art in Ecuador. We are excited to have her come to idiomART in Cuenca and share her talents. She will have an art exhibition, she will speak at our first Saturday Salon, and she will be teaching two different collage classes.

Moya’s exhibition, “Sticks, Stones and Bone”, which is a collection of collage on canvas and shield sculptures, will be opening Thursday, Oct. 8, from 5 – 8 PM.
Moya says that, “The shields, as well as my collages, speak of dualities and of the existential need to be strong and yet vulnerable, to be open to both the joy and the pain. These coexisting concepts are expressed in the juxtaposition of materials – hard and soft, organic and manufactured.”

Moya will also talk about her experience as a Canadian artist living in Ecuador in our first Saturday Salon. As a young artist, recently graduated from art school in the 70s, Moya wanted to move to a place where she wouldn’t be influenced by other artists. She found herself living in a bamboo hut on the beach in Northern Ecuador and hasn’t looked back since! Moya will also read from her book titled, “Lifer: Tales of a Badgirl Artist in Ecuador”.

The Salon is Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10:30 AM. It costs $10 and light refreshments are provided.

To finish off the month, Moya will be giving a paper collage class and an object collage class. These are really fun, hands-on classes. Collage gives us the option of introducing elements that take the viewer by surprise, elements that wouldn’t normally be together, which provoke a second, deeper look at the image. For those who may not be exactly sure what they would like to create, Moya will bring sample collages of various artists and offer ideas for subject matter.

The Paper Collage class is Thursday, Oct. 28 from 9 AM – Noon
The Object Collage class is Friday, Oct. 29 from 9 AM – Noon
Each class costs $20; if you sign up for both, the cost is $35 total.

For additional information and to sign up for the salon and the classes, please contact: idiomartcuenca@gmail.com

Exhibition: Friday, Oct. 8 from 5 to 8 PM; Saturday Salon: Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10:30 AM; Paper Collage Class: Thursday, Oct. 28 from 9 AM – Noon; Object Collage Class: Friday, Oct. 29 from 9 AM – noon, fees are varied, idiomART is located at: Presidente Cordova, between Miguel Angel Estrella y Manuel Vega (diagonal from Coral Centro downtown), Cuenca.

The law you have never heard of may cost you up to $1500

I didn’t know anything about the law. I am in violation. What do I do now?

Ecuador has joined 140 other countries in the fight against money laundering (concealment of the origins of illegally obtained money). The 140 nations include the US and Canada. Ecuador now requires everyone (including expats with permanent residency) to fill out a declaration of assets over $224,240 (single) or $448,480 (couple)

Here’s the catch: the declaration includes any assets you hold anywhere in the world. For example, any retirement investments, rental homes (and with the increase in real estate prices, even a modest home may be worth over $200k), etc.
You were required to fill out this declaration by last June, 2021.

Direct your mind, and meditate Sunday from home

It is our own mind, not our enemy’s, that leads us in the wrong direction. ~traditional

Dear Cuenca Community,

Shambhala Cuenca would like to invite you to meditate together from your home this Sunday at 10:30 AM. There are many forms and methods of meditation – the form you choose doesn’t matter, however it’s a very good thing to remember our shared humanity as we sit quietly and become mindful for a period of time.

Free Language Exchange by YEES

A fun and relaxing environment to use your Spanish and English. Come and join us at Selina’s terrace (Calle Larga 7-93) every Saturday for a chance to practice with native English and Spanish speakers and meet new friends. This Exchange is basically a casual conversation where we switch languages every 30 minutes. This event is free; however, due to the pandemic, don’t forget to follow these directions:

– If the receptionist asks what do you want, tell him/her that you’re a member of #YEES and there’s a language exchange at the terrace that you’re attending.
– Even though Selina’s terrace is an open space and they have all the biosecurity measures, the pandemic isn’t over yet so don’t forget to keep social distance.
– The conversation will be spontaneous as usual. The only rule is switching languages every 30 minutes. You decide which language goes first.

October 2nd, from 2 to 4 PM, Free event, Calle Larga 7-93, Cuenca.

Honoring all Veterans – Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 10:45 AM

Attention all military Veterans, family members and the general public. The annual Veteran’s Day ceremony will be held at San Sebastian Plaza on Thursday, November 11th at 10:45 AM. It’s similar to a meet and greet except we will say a prayer or two for World Peace and also in remembrance of the many Veterans who gave their lives for their countries.

In the past we have had individuals who served not only in the United States of America or Canadian Military but representatives from Great Britain, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa. Please spread the word. It is a short ceremony where we can say “Thank You” to individuals who have served their countries and remember former military brothers and sisters who gave their lives while serving. I have also invited the Ecuadorian Military to send representatives and I hope that they will.

This event is open to all. If by chance you have a flag of the country you served, please bring it. We were not able to put this event on during the Covid pandemic and it takes place outside on the plaza. Please mark your calendar. Thursday, November 11th at 10:45 AM. Thank you in advance for spreading the word and your participation.

November 11th, form 10:45 to 11:30 AM, Free, San Sebastian Plaza, Cuenca.

Sally Lincoln’s work and Celda 211

On February 23rd of this year, 34 inmates were horribly assassinated in Turi’s jail. The horror amounted to nothing as there are still many unanswered questions and justice is yet to be served. Prisons all over Ecuador are a time bomb and these events are soon to happen again and again. Sally Lincoln created an art piece that highlights the horrible events that occurred. La Guarida is honored to show this incredible and powerful art work as we believe these events should not be easily forgotten. I am bringing that same show to you. You’ll enjoy a Beatles medley, a Little Richard quip, a song by The Drifters, a Sam Cooke tune, “Country Roads” by John Denver, a Frank Sinatra song, and more. Entrance is free and there is no minimum.

So, write down the date, Oct. 1, and the time, 9 PM, and come as you are! If you would like to have fun and sing a duet with Robert, please email starofmalibu@aol.com and we will make that happen. And so, music lover, see you and talk with you at Consuelo Restaurante on Friday!

Oh, and I received a special publishing license from Sony Music to record and release Bob Dylan’s iconic, Time They Are A-Changin’ . . . I will be singin’ that one for you too! Come on over. It’ll be great and it will be wonderful to see you. Thank you.

LaGuarida’s Last Week of September. Cheers to Cuenca Salmon

This Week In La Guarida
Join us for our breakfast service: Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 12:30 PM. Have breakfast and check out Eduardo Segovia’s three-floor exhibit. We have more than 60 works by this revered local artist.

Our film choices next week are:

Tuesday, September 28th, at 6:45 PM: Celda 211
An acclaimed Spanish movie in which a newly hired prison officer (Alberto Ammann) finds himself in the midst of a prison riot after an unforeseen turn of events. With the inmates around him unaware of his position, he must pretend to be a prisoner to survive among the inmates ruled by tough Malamadre (Luis Tosar). This projection will be extra special as we will be joined by Sally Lincoln who will be presenting and speaking about her work of art titled “Turi.”

Wednesday, September 29th at 6:45 PM: Richard Jewell
Richard Jewell was an American police officer and security guard. While working as a security guard for AT&T, he became known in connection with the Centennial Olympic Park bombing at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Discovering a backpack filled with three pipe bombs on the park grounds, Jewell alerted police and helped to evacuate the area before the bomb exploded, saving many people from injury or death. Initially hailed by the media as a hero, Jewell was later considered a suspect. Jewell’s case is considered an example of the damage that can be done by media reporting based on unreliable or incomplete information.

Thursday, September 30th at 7:30 PM: Music from the Caribbean and Colombia. Admission: $10. The whole of September was dedicated to different Latin American countries and their music.

This event is free. However, due to the pandemic, don’t forget to follow these directions:

– If the receptionist asks what you want, tell him/her that you’re a member of #YEES and there’s a language exchange at the terrace that you’re attending.
– Even though Selina’s terrace is an open space and they have all the biosecurity measures, the pandemic isn’t over yet so don’t forget to keep social distance.
– The conversation will be spontaneous as usual. The only rule is switching languages every 30 minutes. You decide which language goes first.

September 25th, from 2 PM to 4 PM, Free event, Calle Larga 7-93, Cuenca.

Vision statement
St. Christopher Episcopal Mission

St. Christopher’s Episcopal Mission (SCEM), in a collaborative successful partnership with Mision Sagrada Familia, will be a welcoming gathering place, a spiritual center in Cuenca and the surrounding neighborhood of a theologically humble group of believers worshipping God, meeting Jesus and demonstrating the practical love of Jesus to members, visitors and the poor.

Through action, SCEM will demonstrate what it means to be a follower of Jesus with a commitment to serve those in need by doing good works quietly, without fanfare or notice while fulfilling the question “what would Jesus do”?

SCEM will be a growing force for good in the community, known for outreach ministry.

SCEM, with the help of a Priest will offer Christian educational activities for spiritual growth through liturgical worship, group discussions, learning, and education filled with the Spirit of God’s love for us in our loving hearts and minds.

Visitors will experience Christ centered individuals within an inclusive, multi-cultural, bi-lingual, and multi-generational worshipping community of believers, with close bonds between members, committed to social justice while helping others.

SCEM offers an Episcopal liturgical worship service and experience to the community.

Tullpuna Wine & Art Nights

Join us for the launching of our first Tullpuna Wine & Art Nights, an inspirational and fun event to paint, enough time, and a group of likeminded people, together in a fantastic art gallery atmosphere. Not experience needed, just the desire to create art.

Beginning Thursday, October 14th from 5 to 8 PM, you will have the opportunity to enjoy painting and at the same time learn about the work of local craftsmen.

This time, our paintings will be inspired by the colors of the typical handmade beaded necklaces of indigenous Ecuadorian cultures.

Tullpuna Nights will include:

One cup of wine, white or red.
Your own painting station with table easel, acrylic paints, canvas, brushes, pencils, chalks and more. (You can bring your own favorite brushes.)

You will take home the canvas with your own painting creation. Instructions, tips and recommendations by in-house artist Christian León “Cleón” (not a painting class)
